choosing a breed – second dog?

I have a young just turned 4 Cavalier king charles spaniel, I would LOVE another dog. I have read books and lots of forums about what type of dog is suitable so heres what i think.
-Robert is castrated so i would get a female.
-Small ( smaller that Robert )
-nither submissive nor dominant breed

Robert and the puppy will never be alone as when i’m at college ( night school ) my parents are in. We live in a medium size house, small garden but walk everyday in to the woods next to my house.

so my question is with your expert knowledge do you know of another breed that will fit in with our family? After research – bichon frise comes up alot as a good breed match. My neighbour has a female that Robert is always pleased to meet.

The reason i don’t want another ckcs is because i love Rob and would like a new challenge of a different breed and ckcs have alot more health issues but if its 100% best idea to get another ckcs for Roberts sake i really wouldn’t mind.

I would like to hear from anyone who has a small dog or ckcs and has a different breed. Also i know all about dogs in shelters but i live in England and i’ve looked into sheltered dogs but 99.9% of them are big or staff bull crosses.

I’ve looked into shelters and i’m on a few mailing lists in the area… i have been for 4month and nothing has come up. I’m aware of puppy mills are not looking for a cheap petshop dog ( In England its illegal to sell dogs from a shop ) once 100% decided on a breed i shall search for a good home breeder. I wouldn’t mind a small cross dog from a shelter but they are very rare since the whole "designer dog" thing.

My neighbor had a Bichon that passed away, and just got a second one recently. Both dogs were/are very friendly and happy-go-lucky. My own dog loved their old one and is just as happy to play with the puppy – they love the breed themselves and i have no doubt that if they were into the dog show world they would be working on bettering the breed. As it is both animals are/were spayed.

I think a Bichon might be a good option for you guys. Especially if your dog seems to get along with your neighbors – but be warned, a puppy may not have as much manners as your neighbors dog so YOUR dog may be a little put off in the beginning as they learn to get used to each other.

Poodles are also another good option – they have the same coat type as the Bichon but aren’t as stocky, if you get what i mean. You can also choose between three sizes! Depending on what you are looking for in a dog (IE what matters most to you in terms of looks, temperament, exercise/grooming needs, etc) there are several breeds that could work as well.

Havanese, Coton du Tulear, and as i said the Poodle being some of them. What exactly ARE you looking for besides dog friendly? Any requirements like no shedding, easy to groom, easy to train, etc?

I’m partial to Schnauzers myself but they CAN be a little high strung with other dogs. Have you considered visiting a shelter and seeing what they have to offer?

Any suggestions for a dog with skin problems?

I have a rottweiler/blood hound mix she is 3 years old and seems to have really dry skin. She constantly knaws away at her skin and she is losing her hair because of it. I give her a bath every week but she still seems to be having a problem. I have taken her to the vet and she was given antibiotics for an infection, it went away and now I do not know if it is coming back or if she just has dry skin.

Your vet needs to do a scraping. It certainly sound like mange. Is there a chance that this dog has any pit in it? They are notorious for having demodectic mange. Any dog can get it, but pits seem to have more immune disorders.

Do bull dogs have alot of medical problems?

I want to know if bull dogs have alot of medical problems? Thanks.

all purebreds have alot of health problems because they are inbred and linebred.mixed is healthier and live longer.

Is the meat and rice good for the dog`s health? What will I feed him?

I have a pet named Maxwell. My da just bought him.He likes to eat rice, meat, beef and milk.My aunt said that I should fed him dog food. But whenever I eat rice or meat.He barks at me.And that means he wants to eat that. But whenever I feed him dog food.He doesn`t like the taste.IS THE MEAT AND RICE GOOD FOR THE DOGS HEALTH.WILL I ONLY FEED HIM DOG FOOD 3 TIMES A DAY?

Yes you can feed your dog that diet. There is nothing wrong with a natural diet but you do have to give them some other supplements if you go down that track.

When a friend’s dog got an internal infection, the vet made her feed him cooked (boiled) chicken and rice, because that is what the dog could cope with.

I feed my dog a combination of foods, as I want to get a balanced diet and don’t believe that just processed food is good. If you are not going to feed dog food, there are some vitamins and vegetables that you will also have to give your dog, so that he gets everything he needs.

Also, when my dog was a pup, I did feed her lactose free milk for several months while she was growing and this was recommended to me. Dogs do not cope well with normal milk due to the latose so you do have to get lactose free milk.

These are two great websites that give you information on a natural diet, please read these before you make your mind up. http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/health/diet2.htm and http://www.drianbillinghurst.com/ or http://www.barfworld.com/

What is the cheapest but good dog training company?

Im 13 and I tried to potty train my dog but he peed where I wanted him to pee for only 1 week now hes starting to pee everywhere again. I need a trainer that is good at potty training dogs.

first be sure to have him on a feeding schedule.. then you will know when he has to potty.

dante gets breakfast at 7 and a drink.. then i pick everything up for the day.. then dinner at 6 with a drink. i pick up his water around 8 and listen to see if he drinks anymore. when he drinks, just take him out to potty a few minutes later.

after he goes, give him lots of hoorays and hugs adn scratches… then he knows he did a good job.

also, be sure to clean up the old potty spots in the house reallly good. then he cant smell where he went and think its ok to go there again.

good luck!

Dog Training Tip of the Day- Excitement over food

This is my dog training tip of the day. How to build calmness in your dog using their meal.

If you think in the terms that you are training your dog 100% of the time, every reinforcement you give your dog or the environment gives your dog, is building some behavior or emotional state. What behavior and emotional state are you building every time you put your dogs food bowl down. Are you building calmness or are you building arousal?

You have to feed your dog every day, you might as well capture the behaviors you like and use that meal to its fullest to create a happy calm and well adjusted companion.

Teaching your dog to settle-

This tip should get you thinking about other times you reward arousal in your dog without thinking about it.

Coming up on Dogmantics will be an episode on Pit Bulls as well as an episode on how to get your dog to stop barking!
