Why do people believe that mixes are always healthier?

Seriously.. why do they think that mixing automatically cancells out health problems?

Even funnier is when they claim that mixes are healthier than purebreds.. but then also use the argument that purebreds were all once mixes too!

My purebred Crested is nearly 5 years old and has no major health issues.. he has a few food intolerances, but its not uncommon for dogs to be lactose intolerant, or to have corn allergies. He does also have some line breeding.. a "designer/hybrid" dog person would call him "inbred"

My cousin’s spaniel mix has to stick to a strict diet to prevent urinary issues. She has had surgury once when she was only a few years old to remove HUGE bladder stones.

Growing up, we had a Lab mix who was diagnosed with severe hip displasia before he was 5 years old.. he did live to be about 17, but we were on edge the entire time thinking his hips were going to get worse and we’d have to put him down. He had a terrible temperment, and could not go up or down steps for about the last 10 years of his life!

Someone I knew of on a dog forum had a medium sized mixed breed that needed surgury on both knees for severe luxating patella.. a condition rarely seen in medium to large dogs, its mostly limited to small breeds.

We once found a lab mix.. we thought it had been lost for a while, the thing was very thin. When the owner couldnt be found, we took the dog to the vet.. turns out that it had several major problems.. including a problem with properly digesting nutrients, and severe muscle dystrophy.. doesnt matter how much the dog was fed, it would have starved to death anyways because of the problems it had.. we had to euthanize it.

A friend of mine has a Crested/Schnauzer mix that is allergic to grass.. the poor dog cant go outside without breaking out.

My ex MIL had a collie mix who was deaf and had severe arthritis. She also had a shepherd mix who had to be euthanized for kidney and liver failure.. there was no logical explanation as to why the liver and kidneys failed.

Not all purebreds are healthy either, expecially those that come from untested bloodlines.. but in my experience, I’ve seen more serious health issues with mixes than with purebreds.

What health problems have you seen with mixes?
suggested category..
Food & Drink > Beer, Wine & Spirits
not all purebreds are from mixing breeds.. many are from just selectivly breeding the domestic dog as it was known.. you have to establish breeds before you can mix!

Properly bred dogs are also selectivly bred to breed away from health issues.. why dont people seem to get that?

As for temperment issues.. I know many purebreds with lovely temperments, I only know of a few with issues.

Had a husky mix who I was told was basically "Bi-polar".. she was unstable at times.

My ex MIL had several mixes with TERRIBLE temperments

Our lab mix had a horrible temperment

I don’t think you get it. Purebreds were once mixed breed dogs too but they have been inbred and line bred for many generations to achieve a dog that breeds "true". The only way to get a purebred is by doing this. To further damage things breed clubs like the AKC and CKC focus more on conformation than working ability.

Mixes usually are healthier because the genes have in a sense been refreshed. In my experience mixes have been much, much healthier than purebreds. But to each thier own and people have different experiences with different dogs. Some purebreds can be very healthy.

I see nothing wrong with mixed breeds and love the uniqueness of ‘mutts’. A dog is a living being and there is no ‘real’ guarantee on health whether purebred or mixed. Just like there is no guarantee on your own health. I can’t stand people who bash mixed breeds as if purebreds are somehow better. They are not.

Well I’m not going to get picked for best answer but I don’t care:
Some points in the link were good – others absolutely not. Sure there are examples of bassets and english bulldogs etc that look like the originals that are in existence today. The point is that they are the rarity and they are not what 99.9% of breeders breed for. The dog in the picture IS a bulldog and not a pit bull as the author tried to imply. Breeding dogs for any type of extreme features that can have negative impacts on their health simply because some people think they are ‘neat’ is flat out wrong. There are many purebred breeds that are quite healthy but many, many more that are not. As no surprise these tend to be the most popular breeds and/or the breeds with extreme features. Sure many Canadian and US breeders health check but most kennel clubs will register a litter from a stud that is only 7 months old. Far too young to be health tested. Waiting until 2yrs is just a ‘guideline’. Many working breeds have been ruined by the kennel club.
Why do people believe mixed breeds are healthier than purebreds??? Because it doesn’t take an Einstein or geneticist to know that inbreeding and line breeding is a bad idea and people also realize that this is common place with all purebreds. As mentioned, some purebreds are very healthy. Some mixed breeds are not. The point is that all this talk about health testing in purebreds and weeding out animals with genetic defects so far hasn’t really worked. Most breeds are still affected by the same hereditary defects they were before if not more so. The majority of mutts- dogs mixed for one or more generations ARE healthier on average than purebreds. The more mixed the healthier. So while there are mixed breeds that have horrible temperments ( that can also be due to an inadequate owner by the way ) and mixed breed with health issues there are also purebreds with health issues and as seen in the following link some top breeders still breed dogs with defects even though they are aware of them and these dogs are even winning shows. And this is not just a problem in the UK. It happens here too.

WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG WITH MY DOG?! SKIN PROBLEMS! EXCESSIVE DANDRUFF!?

ok.. so today i was brushing her outside.. and i found that her fur looked in horried condition because i havent brushed her for who knows how long! =(… i admit i HAVE negected her.. the reason why? she is locked in a little room, it acts like her big kennel. i guess.. but she does get food and water daily. 2 meals a day.. and she does get potty time! but no one has really interacted with her. for along time! i feel so bad! and i sorta forget about her.. and i always have to make sure she doesnt get out when i open the door :(

but right now people are working on our fence so there isnt a fence but there is a a little thing that fences our backyard.. i cant explain it sorry.. i forgot what its called.. any ways.. i know what i have done is wrong.. and now i feel that i must take care of her properly.. i have had this feeling before but now i think its time.. ive always seen dogs with the same condition as my dog and now i feel DISGUSTED..

but honestly.. she isnt my dog. ok ok she is but.. i found her wandering on the street.. near my drieway. so i spent over 2 hours going door to door asking if this is their dog.. all the answers i got was "no but i hope you find her owner" so now its been two years.. we took her to the vet to get her shots and stuff.. but now im very worried.. you see her ears are reall gross… if you get a cotton ball with nothing on the cotton ball and just lightly rub agaisnt the inside of her ear there is brown stuff on it.. im going to get peroxide and clean out her ears with the peroxide and cotton ball :) ..

but as i was saying.. i was brushing her cause i havent brushed her in a while,.. and i noticed that her fur was shedding heavily.. so i brushed and after a few brushes the brush i used was all filled up with her fur.. so i did this multiple times until i gave up.. i did this over 10 mintues,.. but while i was brushing.. there were these little flecks of white.. thinking it was flea eggs or mites or whatever i inspected one very closely.. it was not eggs or mites or whatever.. but instead it looked like a very thin fleck of a rectangular piece of dried up skin.. AKA dandruff.. i was so shocked because every time you brushed her fur there were BILLIONS of these things popping out from underneath her fur.. it was so disgusting! im pretty sure she doesn have any worms.. but im going to check next time.. lol..

QUESTIONS:
1.does anyone know what she has? like an infection, disease..ETC?

2. and how can i treat her skin and dandruff or whatever the specks are? i cant go to the vet.. my parents dont like putting her in the car because she will ruin the seats.. and she will not get out of the car… if you can even put her in the car!!

3. i know i am abusing her but i will buy her a kennel as soon as i earn the money! so no mean comments about that! (this isnt a question i know)

4. and about the ears is it ok to pour peroxide on the COTTON BALL and rub her ears with the cotton ball?! im NOT going to pour peroxide down her ear!! just rub her ears with a cotton ball that has peroxide on them!

5. is there any HOME remedy to soothe her skin? on her right thigh near her tail.. her fur is "thining"..why is this? and it feels very "rough" and greasy sorta

she is a border collie and around the age of 3 and a half!! i know cause the vet told us!!

thank you! ANY QUESTIONS? PLEASE DONT HESITATE TO ASK ME BY EMAIL!
excuse me but i know she is in a bad situation right now i dont need complete strangers telling me what i did wrong!

AND TO THE FIRST ANSWER:; her ear does NOT smell bad it doesnt smell at all infact!!

she could have a food allergy.
one of our dogs sheds excessively and gets gross brown gunk in his ears among other symptoms when he is not on his prednisone.
take her to the vet. if your parents wont because they are worried about their precious piece of machinery, walk her, ask a friend, tell them that an animal is worth so much more than the upholstery in a car.

and start taking care of her. she is a living, feeling animal, not a toy.
let her out of her room. how would you feel if you were locked in a room all day with no interaction?
take her for walks, find an off leash dog park where she can run, play with a ball, make new friends.
if you can’t do this, please, please find her a new home. see if there are any animal rescue groups in your area, they are a great resource.

My 14 year old dog has kidney functioning problems. Any suggestions- medical or holistic?

If the dog will eat ice, you can freeze gatoraid or smart water or cranberry juice and feed it to him, cleans out the kidneys.

Can someone help me with a dog health question?

My dog keeps scratching her ears. After a week I finally looked in there and one of them has black/brown colored "goop" in it. We took a Qtip and put alcohol on there to clean it out. We couldnt get it all. Does anyone know what she might have? Also, is there something at the pet store we could get. Trying to avoid a Vet bill unless she needs Rx’s. Thanks for any help.

they sell ear cleaner at Petsmart. clean em for a few weeks, if it doesn’t go away, it could be ear mites…then you need to go to the vet…shouldn’t be too expensive. (probably just dirty)

Are there any sites with tips for dog training?

I have a dog that I’m trying to train. Instead of buying a book, are there any dog training sites I can go on and look at instructions and tips for free?

You need a full and proven training program.

"SitStayFetch" is one of the most popular dog training products on the market written by Daniel Stevens, an experienced dog trainer, for every dog owners who know that the experience of training their dog has or will continue to establish a better relationship with their four legs friend.

First when I read SitStayFetch ebook, I was surprised at lots of information has been covered. The 186 page book is broken down into different sections step-by-step, each one dealing with a different aspect of dog ownership. SitStayFetch starts from a basic that dog owner should know. For instance, things to consider before adopting a dog, choosing the right breed, dealing with breeders, the secrets of dog training; and then moves on at common dog problems including biting and nipping, aggression, jealousy, digging holes, disobedience, separation anxiety, fights with other dogs, destructive behavior and even understanding how your dog thinks.

The core of SitStayFetch system is the communication between dog and owner. Daniel Stevens understands that most of common dog problems are from the lack of communication. Your dog simply doesn’t understand what you want. SitStayFetch demonstrates how dogs communicate, what are they thinking, how you can communicate with them effectively.

This simple technique helps in improving the relationship between you and your dog. And it also doesn’t just focus on one or two aspects of dog ownership. SitStayFetch deals with all common problem behaviors, step-by-step approach tells you exactly what to do and when to do it.

SitStayFetch works because of the tips and advice come directly from the author’s real-life experience. You also can sign up for free 6 days mini course which covers selected training methods and behavior fixing methods that are used in SitStayFetch ebook.

So if you want to have a good relationship with your dog and get rid of dog problems, I think SitStayFetch will definitely help you reach your goals.

What is the AKC thinking??

This was posted on a dog forum I belong to….

AKC just another money grab?

Please read the following two emails, both may be forwarded. The AKC is viewed by many ordinary citizens as a lobbying leader and a class act in support of good health and breeding practices, and is long associated with dog fanciers who breed only for the betterment of the breed. Over the last several years, the AKC has used the public’s perception to increasingly line their pockets with product endorsements. Is this behavior becoming for a 501c3 non-profit corporation? No more. The AKC is nothing more than a registry, and this week, even that has lost its starch. The American Kennel Club has entered into a contract allowing Petland employees to register puppies online at the time of purchase. I’ll post more as it becomes available, and believe me, it will.

Petland discount pet store?? Why would the AKC want to be affiliated with that?
Here is a letter between the AKC and a breed club about the contract. It sounds like they may have cancelled it under pressure. Good!

http://www.gdca.org/AKCpetland.htm

Good question, WHAT ARE they thinking!

They are thinking of $$$. They are acting like a big business, non-profit my ***! This is still not nearly as bad as AKC crawling into bed with HSUS and DDAL on the PAWS deal, another possible big money maker for them.

From what I understand, the Petland deal is dead. Much like PAWS is dead (for now) thanks to a small group of dedicated dog people.

"Not your fathers AKC", no it sure ISN"T my fathers AKC! My fathers AKC was run by dog fanciers, for dog fanciers. The new AKC is all about the money, my fathers AKC would NEVER have crawled in bed with the likes of HSUS and DDAL! UKC is looking better all the time. Most of my dog show dollars are spent north of the border these days, the Canadian KC at least has some sense.

Nor would my fathers AKC continue to have a very prestigious show in a city that has some of the worst anti-breeder laws in the country. Nor would my fathers AKC more or less ignore all the anti-dog legislation (unless it will make them $$$ like PAWS, in which they will gladly support it and sell fanciers down the river for $$$) EXCEPT for the crop/dock ban in their own backyard.

Loki – maybe if AKC is so hard up for cash they should think about dumping their high buck Madison avenue building?

BTW – there IS always the UKC. I would be willing to bet they are having record entries at there shows and will continue to grow as long as AKC continues to not work in the best interests of the dog world.

Dog – Skin problems – any ideas?

My dog often has flaky skin and when brushing him this comes off, almost like a thick dandruff.
He always scratches and bites himself, he doesn’t have any sign of fleas (as he has the flea jab due to an allergic reaction to them)

He bites himself so much that he creates sores which to date I have been putting antiseptic powder on.

Ive tried using anti-itching shampoo, however this doesn’t seem to work!!

Any ideas what this could be?

Hi our girl was allergic to gluten so i changed her diet to
Burns holistic her skin cleared up but she did still get bits of dandruff.
I would also ask the vet to do a blood test to see if your dog is having an allergic reaction to the flea jab plus have his thyroid tested. This is done by a simple blood test.
Good Luck

dogs medical problems!!! pls help?

i just went to the vet with my yorkshire terrier, Pepper, and the vet said that she has full cataract in one eye and the other eye has half. Besides that, he said that it is unusual for a 7 year old to get cataract and the reason for that might be that she is diebetic. (she seems normal besides the fact that she has less of an appetite and she doesn’t run after her tennis ball anymore). AND she might have a heart murmmur. what can i expect? I am so sad right now, but what can i do to help her? Thank you…

We’ll, expect to get her tested for diabetes. My grandmother had a totally blind scottie from cataracts who lived to be 13. Blindness sucks, but a dog can deal with it if you make sure to keep everything nice and low-key. She used to come visit us for a week every Christmas and even after the first time, the dog remembered our house the next year and had no problem adjusting. A heart murmur is usually harmless, but may be a risk under anesthesia. She’s probably had it since birth.
Get a full work-up and follow the vet’s advice. I think you have plenty of time to enjoy your girl still.

What is the best magazine for dog health/lifestyle updates?

Not what the next new "hot brand of dog clothing" is, or where the most expensive/extravagent dog spa is, or the newest designer breed is, but updates on things like food, veterinary care.. You know, stuff that really matters.

Whole Dog Journal- you can get a subscription online or have it mailed to you.

Is it possible to make your own dog training spray?

Is it possible to make your own dog training spray that doesn’t include chemicals?
I would like a natural spray that I can use that will repel him from furnature and clothes. Would lemons work without harming the dog?

Lemons might work but Bitter Apple spray from Vets and some pet stores definitely does and doesn’t include chemicals, but is expensive at £10 a bottle. Trained my dog off the furniture and to stop bad behaviour indoors and now only have to pick up the bottle to get a reaction. It doesn’t matter if it gets on the dog (in fact can be used for excessive fur biting that some dogs do) but avoid eyes (obviously).
Hope this info helps. Incidentally, my dog likes the smell of lemons.
