My Dog Has Skin Problems!Any Vets Out There?
Since my dog Fred was little he has always had skin problems.
He’s a Jack Russell/Corgi and vets have never really been sure what he’s allergic to!
They gave us cream,sprays,tablets and nothing seems to work.
Basically Fred gets very large scabs under his front legs,in his ears and around his groin,I really have no idea what they are.They look very sore and he doesn’t like them being touched.
He’s constantly rolling on his back,scratching his ears,mouth and belly and he DOES NOT have flees.
Please help!

Your vet hasn’t allergy tested your dog? Usually when they can’t determine an allergen right away, they do allergy tests.
If it’s a grass allergy, try wiping down his underbelly, armpits and legs with a damp rag when he comes in from walks or outside.
If it’s a food allergy, try switching to a food with no corn or wheat (common allergens).
If your vet refuses to do an allergy test and doesn’t give you a decent reason for doing so, find a different vet.
Major Dog Medical problem?
I have a pit bull that Is In Great health, but we recently had him neutered, as soon as we got him home he was fine, 2 days later.. in the middle of the night, he pulled out his stitches & left a gaping hole. ( he had a Cone on his head & still managed to do this). my husband took him the next morning to the vet ( today) to get restitched, the vet stapled his hole shut for the second time, & again he pulled out the staples, the vet warned my husband ( according to my husband) that if it happened again ( a second time), he would take our dog for neglect, except we are not neglecting him. twice this dog, who is my baby, has pulled out his stitches /staples. twice we have paid close to 300 dollars, we now have no money to take him to a vet again for a third time. yes we are watching him but if one of us gets up to cook, & or go to the bathroom.. he then does his licking which pulls his wound apart. Now its open & i was told by another vet that pet co has those butterfly stitches. will this work? he has on the cone yet still manages to re open this stupid wound. Only when we look away. Like when we are asleep. what for gods sake can i do please help! he has a bad gaping hole that needs to be staples or stitched, or have those butterfly stitches.. no vet will see us after hours & surly not without money. I don’t want to lose my dog because he is being stupid & ornery.. i love this guy. he is an indoors dog, who is allowed to sleep on the bed with us. we are close, but now getting fed up with his antics!

funny thing, my pit bull did the same thing. However, he had his stitches out before i even picked him up the next day!! i did not realize it until we had gotten home or i would have had them redo the stitches right then. I called my vet immediatly, and he honsetly told me not to worry about it….i of course was concerned, but this vet is incredible (thats another story for another day!) His was not actually a hole. They completed the neuter by making about a 1-2inch cut down the skin over the shaft, they did not literally cut the whole area off, we might have a different situation!
Now, as awful as it sounds, we did not take him to be restitched and he was just fine. We did not use a cone or anything. He was just such a stubborn dog that he would not leave them in. We had a simular incident with a bandage on his foot which he ate! (so please do not judge me for not taking my dog back, i followed vet orders)
Honestly, your vet cannot have your dog taken away because you are seeking medical help for him and paying for it. He is just being a jerk.
Another option might be a male doggy diaper. You may ask your vet first!
as far as the butterfly stitches go, i do not know how well they work. But speaking from experience, my dog was just fine and his wound was technically never closed! by the way, it closed about 2-3 days later.

DO IT! It is the best thing you can do. You’ll save like 80% on vet bills unless something is seriously wrong with your puppy and needs extra care. But for most dogs, the insurance covers everything. And usually it is on a per year basis, and the first year is the most expensive (besides the last years, but you don’t have to worry about that for a LONG LONG time). I have mine through Banfield, and I am so happy! Mine is only 20 bucks a month and was 144 for the start up. If I didn’t have it my bills would be at least 1k by now.

My dog has skin problems. Help!?
I have a dog who has a skin problem. His hair are shedding at the back portion and there are small red spots all over. This happened before and the vet had him injected with antibiotics, plus i get to treat him with a cream that she gave to me.
Is there any other things that I can do to help him out? Could benadryl help? Or some other vitamins perhaps?

we changed her food, and put her in a different setting, and she seems to be doing better.
i think your lab might have an allergy, you should do as some of the other people suggested.
change the food, and mix it around with table scraps.
also you should try to change old carpets, or have em carpet cleaned because there could be bacteria that is causing the reaction.

It could cause instant poisoning or even a slow build up of poison, depending on the size of the dog, the amount ingested, and the type of fertilizer. Check the precautions on the bag, or call the poison control center. You should check with your vet.

I know nothing about dog diseases, I guess like cats, they’ll have certain vaccins and deworming every 6 months?
I’m going to the animal shelter tomorrow and I need to make sure I don’t end up with a dog who has health problems, for 2 reasons: obviously it means more money spending on vets and also, it’s heart breaking to have a pet who’s sick.

These are good answers, but you need to know a couple more things. There is a yearly vaccine called bordatella. Make sure your dog gets that when you take him/her for the yearly visit. It prevents kennel cough in case you are around other dogs, or take her to be groomed.
Adult dogs do not require de-worming unless you notice worms in the stool or she tests positive at your yearly exam.
Dogs get yearly vaccines, and monthly flea and heart worm prevention like frontline or advantage. Your vet can fill you in.
The adoption fee includes vet exam, but it wouldn’t hurt to take him/her to your regular vet right after adoption to make sure you are all on the same page.Shelter dogs and rescue dogs make the best pets. You will not be sorry for adopting.

Using Positive Reinforcement In Your Dog Training
Dogs are very sociable creatures – it’s part of the reason why we love dogs so much. The problem is that when a dog becomes too sociable they can be become agressive and get out of control. That’s why it’s important to train your dog from an early age to make sure that you can control their behavior and prevent this type of behavioral problem.
The most worrying type of agression from any dog is biting as this can have disasterous consequences on both the dog and its family. Current statistics shows that over 70% of dog biting incidents happen within the dogs family. Some of these lead to the dog in question being put down to prevent it happening in future – especially where young children are involved. This is the most tragic possible outcome that could have been prevented by some effective training in the first place.
Proper dog training, from an early age, helps prevent these habits developing in the dog. The training will also allow your dog to remain more in control of their feelings towards other humans and animals. This will give them a better “social life” and allow them to integrate more quickly with their family and their new surroundings.
Actually training the dog is another story. It’s not always as easy as some people make it out to be. Certain things need to be in place for the training to be truly successful. One of the most critical aspects of training any dog is something called “positive reinforcement”. This is simply the system where the dog is rewarded with treats or praise (or sometimes both) when the dog obeys commands or shows positive behavior in their environment. Positive reinforcement shows the dog that they’ll be praised and/or receive a treat when they obey new commands or exhibit a certain behavior that their owner requires. It’s a matter of the dog associating certain good feelings (treats or praise) with obeying a command from his owner. This type of association can quickly become instinctual for the dog.
What if your dog doesn’t immediately obey these new commands or shows a negative behavior? Do you punish the dog? Absolutely not! This sends the dog mixed signals i.e. that the same verbal command or request could just as easily being punished as rewarded. If your dog begins to doubt you in relation to praise or punishment then the training can become very difficult; if not impossible.
Another major mistake to avoid is training the dog into a bad habit – instead of in the opposite direction. For example, when dogs bark, it is usually because they’ve seen or heard something strange or unfamiliar. When dogs continue to bark, even if it includes barking at a familiar person, that becomes a problem. How do most people deal with their dog barking? They yell at the dog to shut up. Unfortunately the dog could take this action as their owner joining in the “barking experience” and the dog will then just continue to bark every time they’re yelled at thus making matters worse for everyone involved.
Any dog training performed without some form of positive reinforcement is a waste of the dogs and the owners time. The sooner you adopt this technique into your training program for your new pup or older dog the sooner you’ll see positive results.

Fleas are another concern for dogs and they can lead to excessive licking, particularly around the tail, which can ultimately lead to hair loss and sores.
It is very easy for your vet to see if your dog has fleas if you are unable to do so yourself and there are simple solutions to eliminate fleas.
Dogs can also get varying skin diseases and some breeds are more susceptible than others.
There are many good lotions and antibiotic pills that can be administered by your vet to control this and the sooner you get these problems seen to the better as they can lead to more intensive skin problems if left unattended.
