If any, is there a dog breed with the most health issues?
Any purebreds that have the most health issues? I just want to know because it got me curious when people asked if there are any dog breeds with LESS health issues. So I wonder which had the MOST.
Thank you in advance!
Great Danes, and English Bulldogs?
If to be mistaken, dont Golden Retrievers have some health issues too?
English Bulls win, followed by Dobermans, Irish Setters, and Dalmations, who experience a high number of genetic defects. (Obviously poorly bred dogs have much more problems than those from a quality breeding program!) Generally speaking, giant breeds like Great Dane, St Bernard, and Neopolitan Mastiffs would come next, as they have a much shorter life expectancy and are prone to joint, gastric, and heart diseases. And yes, Goldens are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, as well as allergies. Again, well bred dogs are healthier by far than puppy mill dogs, so where you get your dog is as important as what dog you get.
i would say great dane, me and my dad had one that wuz only three and had heart failure and collapsed one night and died, and our other 5 yrs old isnt doing to well now…Dont get me wrong we take pride and care for ours dogs as if they were our children.

I would vote for English Bulldogs as one purebred with the most health problems. Now don’t get me wrong i’m a bullie owner and their my fav dog, but it seems they have the most problems health wise because of improper breeding and things like that. Plus the OFA(Orthopedic Foundation for Animals) ranks bullies as #1 dog for hip dysplasia. Plus with the cherry eye, palate problems, and allergies they tend to rack up the highest vet bills when they are very ill. There are other breeds with lots of problems but this is the breed i know the most about. Now there can be perfectly healthy bullies out there but they are the product of good breeding and careful planning. Since most BYB’s just wanna make $$$ the bulldog suffers because of that and then you get bullies with tons of health problems.

All purebreds are prone to a host of health problems when left in the ignorant, money-hungry hands of backyard breeders and puppy mills. I don’t think there is any single breed that stands out as the sickliest, though English Bulldogs do come to mind for their breathing and hip problems.
However, in good breeding programs run by experienced, educated breeders who are not motivated by money, these flaws are actively weeded out and eliminated from the bloodlines, creating dogs that are as genetically robust as any mixed-breed. So it really is dependent on the qualifications and intentions of the breeder how healthy a dog in any given breed will be.

English Bull dog and then I’d say shihtzu…English bull dog takes the cake though by FAAARRR.
Dont get me wrong, all breeds come with some type of health problems (labs=hip displaysia& cancer, pugs=breathing etc) but English bulldogs have alllllll kinds of problems lol
I thought I’d add that I DO love English bulldogs…I’d lovvvve to own one but I cant afford the medical care =(

EB’s are one of the few breeds where even the "champions" and "well bred" dogs are RIDDLED with health issues.

Golden Retrievers (purebred) now have an 80% cancer rate. Be careful, if you are willing to take the risk, they are fantastic pets. But I lost my golden to cancer and it caused a great deal of pain in my whole family.
