my dog’s breath smells like ass. do they have doggy mints or could this be a medical problem?
My dog is 5 and weighs about 8 pounds (bichon/ small breed) but has the worst breath any suggestions???
He could have halitosis form needing his teeth cleaned, this is very common in small breed dogs. Diabetes will cause bad breath (I’m not saying your dog has that problem at all, other symptoms would be involved, i.e. excessive water intake ETC…). If you have a cat or there are cats in the neighborhood he could be sampling the "kitty roca", they love cat poo!
He might have a dental problem, or he could just be eating poop outside.
Take him to the vet to rule out medical problems, and if he has nothing wrong, they make bones with brushes that freshen up dog’s breath. And start regularly brushing his teeth with dog toothpaste.

It could definitely be a medical issue. It is important for his/her health that you take care of the teeth and gums. If this is an ongoing, chronic problem, take your dog to the vet to address the issue.
Our dogs love Deta-bones. They are made to help clean teeth and have eucalyptus in them and act as a breath freshener. They are made by Nylabone and you can find them at Petco. However, this is a temporary fix for the problem. Good luck!

Totally agree with Corgi. Sometimes it is a bad tooth that makes a dog’s breath stink…and sometimes it is the poop. Maybe you should get a quick check up first before you buy expensive breath mints.

I would first of all suggest phoning a vet. The reason being your pup could have some dental problems … and the vet will ask you very specific questions to determine this. If they can’t they will ask you to come in for an appointment.
Your dog could have bad breath because of eating bad things, and there are things like mints that supposedly (never tried them, but I have seen them at Pets At Home in the UK, a large franchise/business) cure them of this. However, if it is indeed dental problems it will be less pain for them and cheaper for you in the long run (just like you and a dentist) to get them seen to sooner rather than later.
So I would say phone the vet first, no need to go in straight away. IF the vet suspects something in this particular case, it would be VERY good not to ignore them. It will cost a little just now, but could possibly save a LOT later one in your pups life !!!

8 lbs is awfully small for a Bichon. Small breeds tend to have dental issues anyway. I started feeding my Bichon raw foods(also had AWFUL breath) and it started getting better. By chewing bones and cartilage it helps clean the teeth. You could also have the vet do a dental cleaning. The smell comes from tartar build up; if it isn’t handled it can cause gingivitis, heart disease, and abscesses.

my bad breath puppy!
The major cause of dog bad breath is bacteria on the top of the tongue which can be cleaned off. I have witnessed a Vet clean a dog’s tongue with OraBrush tongue cleaner with great results. Humans bad breath is also caused by this same bacteria which can be also cleaned off with OraBrush. OraBrush was designed for humans but it can also be used for cleaning a dog’s tongue. Here is their website:
