Dog Health Care Article: How Your Dog Gets Fleas and How to Get Rid of Them
In this article, “How You Dog Gets Fleas And How To Get Rid Of Them”, we will discuss the methods by which your dog can become infested with fleas. In addition, we will discuss a bit about the life cycle of fleas and how flea and tick treatments can stop the flea life cycle dead.
Fleas are those nasty little insects that periodically infect our cats, dogs and homes. Fleas feed on the blood of our pets. They can irritate their skin not only from the bite and skin infections, but also some pets are allergic to fleas.
Fleas are the most common cause of skin problems in dogs and cats. If you notice your dog scratching and chewing the back half of its body, check for fleas around the base of the tail, the back side of the hind legs or the dogs stomach.
No matter how clean our homes are, our dogs can encounter fleas on their daily excursions outside. They then bring this insect home on their fur and the cycle of infestation starts. The adult flea lays eggs which drop off the dog all over the house: in the pets bed, on couches, in the carpet, around the baseboards, practically anywhere your dog is allowed to roam in the house and car. These eggs hatch, become larvae, and develop into cocoons where they develop into adult fleas, and the cycle begins again.
There are many over the counter preparations which can kill the flea, but do nothing to stop the cycle. Because there are still eggs, larvae and cocoons around the pets living environment. Through your veterinarian you can obtain either a topical or oral preparation. One method kills the fleas before they lay the eggs and the other kills the eggs that have been laid on your pet. Both are equally safe and harmless to the pet and its family. Both methods require monthly dosages of medication on a permanent basis to prevent re-infestation. Your veterinarian will prescribe the best medication for your particular pet and the dosage will be according to your pets weight. As your pet grows, the dosage will change. Not only will your pet and home be flea-free, but the chances for your pet being infected with tapeworms will also decrease.
Consult your veterinarian as soon as possible to start a monthly routine to save your pet the irritations caused by fleas.

Special Pet Care Needs For Older Dogs
The average lifespan for most dogs is between eight and sixteen years. Some breeds age expectancy is less while other breeds normally have a longer lifespan. Once your dog becomes older it is time to take some preventative steps in order for them remain healthy, happy and active. Have your vet examine your pet annually or more often, if necessary. Veterinarians understand the different breed types and are familiar with problems you may encounter with your pet. They watch for this and make you aware of what to look for, if your dog is acting a little different.
As in humans, keep your dogs weight within the proper or optimum range. An overweight dog has far more health problems such as joint problems, arthritis, diabetes and liver or kidney malfunctions. If your dog is too heavy, buy dog treats low in sugar and salt or purchase dog cookies especially made for overweight dogs, which are low in calories. Also, cut down on the amount of treats given to your pet. It is hard to resist their soulful eyes but always remember that it is for their own good. You do not want to kill your pet by thinking you are being kind to them. Feed your pet once a day or smaller amounts twice a day but remove the food if there is any left. If you have children, explain to them why they should not sneak food to the family pet.
Pre-soak or add water to the dog’s dry food if they have lost some teeth or have dental problems. Daily brushing helps prevent problems but always use toothpaste made specifically for pets, not humans. Start brushing your pet’s teeth when they are young, so they are used to the routine. Have their teeth examined annually by the vet, as they may need to have some pulled or professionally cleaned.
As with dogs of any age, make sure there is always fresh, cool water available. Some older dogs have problems getting to the water bowl so either take the water to them or place bowls of water in several different places so they do not have to go far for a drink.
If possible take your dog for a short walk daily. This helps the dog’s blood circulation and provides some new sights and smells to stimulate them and it gives you quality time to spend with your pet.
Unfortunately, dogs suffer from arthritis just like humans. Keep your dogs weight down and feed him food especially formulated for older dogs, as this does help. Talk to your vet because there is medication available that often makes your pet more comfortable and move easier. Supplements are available, but always check with your veterinarian before giving these to your dog.
Many great orthopedic dog beds are available. Some are made of memory foam and there are heated beds available. An older dog needs good support and warmth for their aging body. Dog beds are easies for your pet to get into than a sofa or your bed.
Looking after your senior pet and taking him to the vet regularly helps keep your dog healthy and happy longer.

Taking Care of Your Dog – Daily and Weekly Tasks
Dogs are man’s best friends. In turn, they rely on us to take care of them and to keep them healthy. Owning a dog is a big responsibility. They cannot take care of themselves and we must nurture them similarly as we would a baby. By following daily and weekly procedures, we can make this task less daunting and eliminate serious problems before they arise, as well as, preventing complications.
There are certain things we need to do on a daily basis to provide appropriate care for our animal friends. Just a few minutes out of your day would be enough to satisfy these duties and will give you and your dog a chance to establish a bond. Feeding, of course, is one of them. A dog should be fed twice a day and also should be provided with plenty of drinking water.
In addition, your dog requires playtime with you. This is very important because dogs are by nature social animals that need companionship. So, get down on the floor and let your dog know he is special to you. You will have a fun experience, and in turn, the dog will show his appreciation through his love, loyalty and eagerness to please you. This playtime will possibly eliminate behavior problems that result from enormous amounts of alone time for dogs. A daily, or twice daily, walk will satisfy your dog’s exercise needs and get him some fresh air. Exerting energy is important and will result in a calmer dog. On your walk, he will see other animals and people and this will also satisfy his socialization needs.
Another important daily task would be to examine your dog. This will allow you the opportunity to stumble upon problems before they get serious. Get to know your pet by running your hands over his body. Start with his head and ears, down the front of his body, down his back and sides of his body, and then, his legs chest and abdomen. By getting to know the feel of your pet, you will be able to spot abnormalities early on. This is also a good time to look for skin problems, aches, pains, eye problems, ear infections or tooth and gum problems.
Dental care is also important in dogs. Ideally this should be done on a daily basis, but if you can fit it in twice a week that would also suffice. Food particles on a dog’s teeth will combine with bacteria to form plaque, which if not removed will turn into tartar. This can cause tooth and gum problems. By using a dog toothpaste and soft bristled toothbrush and concentrating on the two upper canine teeth or fangs and two upper fourth premolars or the large teeth in the back of the mouth, you can keep your dog’s teeth healthy, problem free, and his breath fresher smelling.
Remember also that a longhaired dog will do well with a daily brushing. Shorthaired dogs also need brushing. This will spread the natural oils from their skin, prevent tangles and matted hair, remove loose and dead hair and keep him looking well.
On a weekly basis, you should check your dog’s ears for possible infections and clean them, trim his nails, and inspect and clean his eyes.
Dogs need our loving care and attention to keep healthy and clean. We are responsible for this. Although it may seem like an endless chore, if we combine it with some playtime and fun, both you and your dog will enjoy this time together. You will develop a bond that will last a lifetime and your dog will be your loyal companion. In the end, you will see that you will get as much out of these care procedures as your dog does.

?new Hampshire Man Creates All Natural Skin Care Products for Man and Beast?
On a summer morning in August of 2004, the 19th to be exact, I remember seeing the overhead lights flash above my head as I was rolled down the hallway to the elevator at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in downtown Boston. I expected my life to change after they were done. The Doctor’s were sure this surgery was necessary and upon reflection of my condition I had to agree. The large, heavy doors swung open as I was wheeled into the operating room and about all I remembered until I awoke in recovery, were these words. “This will help you to relax”, next thing I knew I was out cold.
Several hours had passed before I awoke and was able to gain my bearings. I was tired, but I felt good, relaxed, but wide-awake, anxious, yet calm. Soon I was able to see my wife and sons and we looked at each other as the tears began to flood our eyes, we all knew change had come and it had arrived with full force. I pulled back the sheet covering my right side and looked down to the emptiness that now was a reality. Tears fled our eyes and ran down our cheeks as we accepted with finality my condition; you see they had just removed my right leg about 4 inches below the knee. Life often changes in ways we could never imagine, I mean in all honesty, these things happen to other people, is usually the first thought that comes to someone’s mind, isn’t it?
After several weeks I finally came home after a stint at a rehabilitative unit and found I could only use my wheel in our small kitchen. I would have to use the walker to go throughout our tiny apartment. We are grateful to have it as the Lord had provided it right when we needed it most.
My name is David Harper and I sold cars for Volkswagen in Manchester, NH to support my family and I was also a country evangelist on staff at our church. Life changes in drastic ways, but you must learn to accept those changes and “ Take your liabilities, or in my case, disabilities and learn to turn them into assets.” Changes do not have to become a negative, in my case it led me to make all natural bar soaps to help me avoid infections and complications on my stump or residual limb, call it what you want. There, in that small kitchen, the only room I could get around in, I started researching natural soap recipes and healing properties of essential oils. After a while I found a combination that seemed to work, plus it was much healthier for my family as well. I dreamed of creating a company called the “White Mountain Soap Company” but with no reasonable income to speak of, I let the idea and the dream go.
In February of 2007 a Pastor friend and his wife came to visit me from Rhode Island, his name was Nash Desent and his wife was Suzanne. They have nine children ranging in age from 6-21 at the time. They were concerned with how we were getting along. I had met Nash at a weekend prayer retreat 5 years earlier and we had become close friends during bi-monthly meeting we attended for the Independent Baptist Prayer Fellowship we belonged to. They are one of the most generous families we have ever known. We have known a few and they rank up toward the top of our list.
I noticed Suzanne had a skin problem on her face and she told me about the dust mites that were constantly attacking her and it seemed she found no relief with either problem. She was constantly in a rash caused by the mites and the skin condition on her face looked a lot like psoriasis, the flaky type you can get from the winter. After our visit I sent her home with 4 or 5 bars of soap and asked her to try it to see if it would help. Only a few days had passed and I received a call that she was 90% better and the dust mites no longer plagued her. What a blessing for me to have such a report about my soap.
Nash called me with in a few days and asked me what my desire was in creating this soap. I stated that my original intent was to find a concoction that would benefit other amputees and diabetics with skin care products that would make a difference and help them maintain healthy limbs and skin tone. He asked me what it would take to get started and the rest is history as they say. The White Mountain Products Company was born and its “Limb Defense” Line was launched. Our first liquid sample batch was created in our kitchen and from there we moved production to a state of the art sterile laboratory setting out of state. The only request that was made upon me was to make a product line they could use for their dogs as well. You see the Desent’s own “Desent Alaskan Malamutes” and are registered breeders with the AKC. Not a problem for me, and our Malamute Mountain Brand of Canine Defense products was also launched on May 26th, 2007.
Our products are all naturals and can help with a host of problems amputees, diabetics, psoriasis suffers experience, as well as your best friend (dog) may experience. Dust mites, hot spots, abrasions, ulcers, dry patches, and cysts, nail fungus, fleas, and ticks. The list could go on. Many people have told us of the beneficial effects our products have had on their dogs and how their lives were made better by the simple use of a shampoo and skin lotion. Our products have a medicinal smell due primarily to the Melaleuca Alternifolia Oil (tea tree oil). The Desent’ also were able to start bathing their puppies within one (1) week of birth with no ill effects. On a very positive note, wet dog smell has been virtually eliminated with the use of our products and the coats color is greatly enhanced by the use of Aloe and other essential oils.
Our “Limb Defense and Canine Defense” line of products have been sent all over the world to help amputees, diabetics, and psoriasis/eczema sufferers, as well as pet owners who want the best for their animals. Read the warning labels on most canine shampoos and you will be shocked at the danger they pose to yourself as well as your pet. I was shocked at the many warnings I read on multiple manufacturer labels. One that will make you laugh was made by a National Company you would recognize, that simply stated it was not to be put in water and that it was considered hazardous waste when you disposed of the product or its packaging. That, I thought was amazing! Why would anyone even consider using such a product as this, but I realized that most folks just don’t know about the dangers and in many cases these products can be produced very cheaply and that is often a very appealing consideration in purchasing just about any product.
I saw a need in the community as a whole and decided I wasn’t going to accept being disabled with out a fight, and I still fight on a daily basis to be up and around because of health issues, but I don’t give in to it…I have often said since my amputation, “If you fail, try again, if you fall, pick yourself up, if you stumble into a pit of discouragement, climb or claw your way out, and along the way encourage others by your example and never, ever consider giving up!” Life is too precious to waste!
Amputees and diabetics are everywhere, there numbers are increasing every year, and they need any help that can come their way, which can help them avoid skin and limb related issues. Please tell your friends about our products and let other dog owners know there are products available to help their beloved animals.

The Poodle Dog Breed Tips And Advice On Health And Care
While ranked as one of the ten most popular breeds, Poodles also have their share of Poodle health problems just like any other dog breed. Problems that affect the eyes are the most common for Poodles. Progressive retinal atrophy or PRA is the most common eye problem for Poodles. This condition destroys the photoreceptors found on the retina in the eye. Basically it causes the retina to shrivel up as the disease progresses until the dog goes completely blind. As the dog ages the condition will get progressively worse, but it can appear in dogs anywhere between two years of age to eight years of age.
A sudden appearance of being afraid of the dark is the most common symptom for a dog with this condition. PRA is also caused by a recessive gene that can remain dormant in a line of dogs for several generations before showing up in a dog. It is very difficult to predict which dogs will get PRA and currently there is no cure.
There are many more Poodle health problems that you should be aware and not just the eyes. Your dog can be affected by other Poodle health problems such as a bleeding disorder known as Von Willebrand’s Disease, which affects the proteins in the platelets. As a result the dog’s platelets don’t have their normal adhesive properties and then they can’t stick together in order to stop a dog from bleeding. The blood will not clot normally with any injury. Typically this condition is unnoticed in the dog until they have surgery or experience a traumatic injury, usually causing the dog to bleed out before treatment can be done.
If you have a miniature Poodle then there is achondroplasia, which is a condition where the long bone cartilage in the leg hardens because of their abnormally short legs. For the larger standard Poodle the common bone problem is hip dysphasia, which is a malformation of the hip socket and femoral head. Then there are allergies that can cause skin conditions on the face and feet. Some can result in itching, others in moist and smelly skin and still others that cause pustules to appear.
Poodle health problems include bloat, which can occur in standard Poodles. This is a condition that can happen in any breed that is large and deep chested. While the exact cause is not known the results of this condition are always and quickly fatal. With this condition the stomach fills with an excessive amount of gas and stomach fluids and cause the stomach to blow up like a balloon.
The buildup is the result of the stomach flipping itself over causing both ends to twist close. The only cure for a dog with this condition is to receive surgical care from a veterinarian within a few hours. Without the care of a veterinarian the dog will die and it will be painful for the dog. However, the bad news is that even with surgery the dog’s chances of survival are not that high, but successful surgeries often correct the problem for the life of the dog.
