As a responsible pet owner, you should be familiar with the dog health conditions that always hit many dogs in a year. We all want out dogs to look happy, jumping up and down when they see us, and to play with us anytime, anywhere. This won’t happen though when they get sick and we don’t address it at once. Here are some dog healths conditions that you need to know:

Just like human, your dog can get skin allergies too that are caused by dust mites, pollens, food ingredients, fleas and molds. If your dog is itching excessively in every part of his body, then it is he or she has allergies. Since there are different types of allergies, it is much better if you go to the veterinarian in order to look at your dog. Also ask your vet for medications and other recommendations to prevent allergies, especially if they are getting worse.

Heartworm disease is caused by an infected mosquito that has larvae in its body. It bites the dog and deposits the larvae, where it matures and migrates near the heart to reproduce. The larvae can reach their heart and slowly kill them. Sadly, symptoms don’t appear until after a year since it was bitten. The best way is to bring your dog to the vet to perform a heartworm test and be treated immediately if he or she s positive. The treatment could be he or she will drink a tablet or have a topical treatment that will make your dog heartworm-free in no time.

Ear infections are caused by yeast growing in their ears and can annoy your dogs very much. The symptoms here are always scratching in the ear area, whining, and a white substance coming out from the ear. This is one dog health problem that can bring a lot of damage to their ears and can even result to loss of hearing. Treat your dog immediately and ask the veterinarian for help on what to do on the treatment.

Conjunctivitis is a dog health problem where there is inflammation and infection in the eye caused by parasites and allergies and is very common on domestic dogs. There will be discharge coming from the eyes that is a bit greenish. This can cause the loss of sight for your dog if not addressed immediately, so check this up on your vet before it’s too late.

Mange is also one dog health condition that you should watch out for because this can cause the skin of your dog to get dry fall out. This is caused by a mite that burrows itself on the skin of your dog. There will be red parts and scabs that can get worse if not treated immediately.

These are just some of the dog health problems that you should be familiar with in order to better take care of your dog. It is happiness for pet owners to see their dogs healthy and very lively, so always take care of your dog’s health to have a happy relationship with them.

Aging Dogs and Some Common Issues

How old should a bitch be when weaning her last litter? In general, a female should not be more than five years old when weaning her last litter, nor younger than the second heat, which means between one and two years old. She should also be bred only every other heat, which means a total of three or four litters throughout a female’s lifetime.

How old should a male dog be before he should be prevented from copulating? Dogs generally have a self-checking mechanism, which means that they would not ordinarily pursue sex beyond their abilities and fortitude. If they did attempt copulation beyond their physical stamina, they would simply pass out. As dogs get older, they have a lower sperm count, so for selective breeding purposes you are better off using a younger dog with not only fine conformation but stable temperament as well.

Do female dogs experience a change of life? Not that we are aware of. Female dogs can remain fertile until they die. We know of a cocker spaniel that had puppies at the age of fourteen. For the most part females simply stop coming into heat, or come into heat less often, without any menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, etc.

What is the oldest a dog can live? We have heard of dogs living to eighteen years. In general, these cases occur among the smaller breeds.

How does a dog’s hearing or sight change as he gets older? It generally gets worse. Barring any medical problems, it is not uncommon to see normal longevity of nine to fifteen years in a dog that has become deaf. The older dog will lose his hearing gradually, so that his owner is often not aware of it until the dog is deaf or almost deaf. Dogs very rarely become blind, but many will experience a clouding of the lens as they get older. A dog’s sight is comprised of rods but no cones, so they don’t see color – only shades of black, white, and gray.

Do older dogs tend to get fat? Dogs in general tend to be overfed. They are being killed with kindness through frequent snacking. However, older dogs, like people, will tend to loose muscle tone. Overfeeding and lack of exercise will cause any age dog to become overweight.

How common is the problem of gastric torsion? It seems to occur primarily in big dogs. The condition usually is precipitated by a heavy, fatty meal, eaten hastily, followed closely ‘by a lot of water then by exercise. The stomach is contracting, trying to digest food and building up fermentation momentum until, in the big chested dog, the stomach literally flips over, twists, and closes off the openings at both ends. It can be remedied only by immediate surgery to unclip the stomach and sew it to the stomach wall if necessary. If not caught in time, the dog goes into shock and dies.

Dog Training: Common House Training Problems

In terms of dog training, house training is one of the areas of dog ownership and one of the most common dog training problems that is most subject to misunderstanding, confusion, and just plain dread boy dog owners and even dog training experts.

In today’s dog training article we are going to examine and learn how to deal with two of the most common problems surrounding the issue of house training your dog:

- Submissive and excited urination

- Scent marking behavior

Common house training problem #1: Submissive and excited urination

What is it a ‘submissive urinator’?

A ‘submissive urinator’, in dog training terms, is a dog that urinates on the floor and himself (and sometimes on you or any guests you may have!) in situations of extreme excitement or stress, like when you return home at the end of the work day or when the dog is being told off for some bad behavior.

Why does this happen?

Puppies are the most usual candidates for submissive/excited urination, but it is also not uncommon to see this behavior in adult dogs as well. Usually, these are highly sensitive and timid dogs, and/or ones from a shelter/with a history of abuse (often these last two go hand-in-hand and one of most common things we see as dog training professionals.)

When does it happen?

Situations which are likely to trigger an excited/fearful dog to urinate:

- Greeting time after a prolonged absence of owner

- Play time where a dog gets too excited

- The arrival of guests (particularly unknown guests)

- Stressful situations at home, eg arguments involving owner

- During a behavior correction such as you’re telling him off

- Sudden and unexpected loud noises such as thunder or fireworks

What can I do about it?

Luckily as dog training experts will tell you, it is not difficult to prevent your dog from doing his submissive or excited urination.

Firstly and most importantly, you should take him to the vet to make sure there is no unknown medical reason for the issue (such as diabetes or a hidden bladder infection.)

Next, it’s time to take use good dog training techniques to control the problem:

- Try to limit his intake of water to help him control his bladder more effectively, this is very important. Don’t restrict his water intake over a prolonged period of time, but if you know there is a situation coming which would normally result in a loss of bladder control, for example, you have guests coming over, or are planning on a play session soon, take his water bowl away for a period of time (maybe half an hour to an hour) before the event.

- When greeting your dog, keep it calm and mellow. The more excited he is, the harder it is for him to control his bladder, so don’t encourage him to get worked up: ignore him for the first few moments, or give him a very neutral “hello”, a quick and gentle pat, and then go about making yourself at home.

- It’s important that you DO NOT punish or harshly correct your dog for this behavior. It is not something that he can easily control, and he’s certainly not doing it on purpose. Punishing a dog for this behavior can cause emotional distress and lead to more problems for you and the dog in the long run. When you catch him in the act, you can interrupt him (a firm “No!” followed by praise when he stops should suffice) but don’t punish him. Keep your cool, and try to be sympathetic: he doesn’t mean to do it, after all!

- If he urinates out of fear (submissiveness) when scolding him for another offense, try to take the stress levels down a notch by keeping a firm, authoritative, but not angry tone. Remember, you’re dealing with a sensitive, highly-strung dog: if you get angry or worry him further, the problem will worsen.

Common house training problem #2: Scent marking

In dog training terms ‘Scent marking’ is where a dog ‘marks’ his or her territory with urine. Technically this is not actually a house training problem, since it’s based on the dog training issues of dominance and territoriality rather than insufficient house training. A dog can be perfectly house trained but still feel the need to mark inside the house.

However, because – since the problem centers around the unwanted presence of urine in the house – it seems logical, in a way, to link this problem with house training. Since this is one of the most widespread problems among dog owners, we as dog training professionals thought it worthwhile to include some practical advice.

Scent marking and lack of house training: how to differentiate between the two

Your dog is most likely scent marking their territory, rather than genuinely relieving himself, if:

- The amount of urine produced is relatively small, and tends to be directed against vertical surfaces such as doors, walls or furniture.

- If your dog is an unneutered male and at least five or six months old. Unneutered dogs are much more territorial than neutered ones. If you have an unneutered dog in the house, you can pretty much expect a certain amount of scent marking as he defines his own areas. It should also be noted that unspayed females also mark, but it is much less common. Spayed and neutered dogs can also exhibit marking behavior, but it’s relatively rare but should not be discounted.

- It makes little difference how often he is taken outside for a toilet break

- He frequently targets items that are new to the house such as new possessions, guest clothing/footwear, etc that do not carry some form of his scent

- You live in a multi-dog household and there is conflict between two or more of the dogs. In this case it is a dominance issue between the two and they may both mark.

- There are other, unneutered or unspayed pets in the house

What to do about the problem?

From a dog training perspective the first thing you need to do is spay or neuter your dog(s) as soon as you possibly can. If you can do this early enough, ideally, at six months of age, this often halts marking altogether. If this is not possible or if your dog’s been marking for a prolonged period of time, he or she may continue to do so after being spayed or neutered, since a pattern of behavior will have been established.

Ensure you clean soiled areas thoroughly. Use a non-ammonia based cleaner, because it smells just like pee, and stay away from vinegar too, it smells similar to pee as well. Oxi-Clean mixed with warm water is particularly effective on these areas and there are also plenty of commercial cleaners designed specifically to lift pet stains and odors, which you can buy from pet stores and some supermarkets.

Because dogs tend to re-mark the same places, you’ll need to redefine the places that you know he’s marked to prevent repeat offending.

Many dog training experts will recommend the following ways to do this:

- Feed him next to or on top of the spot

- Play with him there

- Groom him there

- Put his bed over or next to it

- Spend time there yourself: hang out with a book or sit down and work

Finally, one particular aspect of dog training that is often overlooked is if there is rivalry between dogs in the household. In this case you will need to take steps to resolve it. Any conflict is likely to be hierarchical in nature (a ‘power struggle’), which means that all you have to do to stop the tension is pay attention to which dog seems to be more dominant than the other one (which one eats first, gets the toys he/she wants, ‘stares down’ another dog), and reinforce this position to establish the hierarchy.

So how do you do this? From a dog training perspective it is relatively simple. First, feed the dominant dog first. Pet him/her first. Give him/her a toy before anyone else gets one. This makes it clear to all dogs in the house which one really is the dominant dog. When this hierarchy’s been recognizably established, territorial and dominant behaviors like scent marking often vanish overnight.

Protect Your Pet From These Common Dog Health Concerns

There are many common dog health problems, but some are breed specific. For example, giant breed dogs are more likely to have joint problems in their growing period if not on the proper nutrition. However, there are some common health concerns that fit almost every breed.

Allergies in Dogs

It is an extremely common issue with dogs to have some type of allergy. Many have airborne allergies like people do, others may have food allergies, and some suffer from both. Unlike people, dogs do not sneeze or get the sniffles. Dogs with allergies tend to bite their paws, have ear infections, and may have skin conditions such as scratching and biting on other areas besides the paws.

Treatment for dog allergies is antihistamines. Most veterinarians prescribe diphenhydramine hydrochloride, and hydroxyzine. If the allergy is seasonal, these drugs work remarkably well at reliving symptoms, if the dog suffers from food allergies a natural diet consisting of one meat and one carbohydrate is normally best to control the allergies.

Constipation in Dogs

This is a very common health issue with dogs, especially as they grow older. The solution is to increase their fiber intake either by the food they eat or by giving them canned pumpkin. Dogs love pumpkin, and it helps with both diarrhea and constipation. The easiest way to give it to the dog is mix a teaspoon (for a small dog) with their meals.

Diarrhea in Dogs

This is exceedingly common, and many veterinarians see many dogs each day suffering from the condition. Puppies are prone to diarrhea more than adult dogs, but it can and does happen to adults of all breads. Common causes include an abrupt change in the dog’s diet; puppies often eat inappropriate items, which can lead to diarrhea and colitis.

Chronic diarrhea requires veterinarian assistance because it can lead to dehydration and the doctor will need to figure out what is causing the condition. Treatment consists of anti-diarrhea medications.

Cancer in Dogs

This is an extremely serious health condition and more canines are developing cancer than ever, which many point to as a cause of not having a healthy enough diet. Dogs need a holistic food with natural ingredients. Read the ingredients; you should be able to recognize more of the ingredients. Avoid grocery store brands since they are full of preservatives and dyes that dogs simply cannot digest. Keeping your dog on a healthy diet from the start can lessen their odds of developing cancer when they get older.

Treatment options are similar to people and many dogs successfully go through chemotherapy. Depending on the type of cancer, surgery may be an answer.

Fleas and Ticks in Dogs

When summer comes around, so do fleas and ticks, and they are hungry to find a dog to chew on and make their home. Dogs with fleas are miserable and one flea can turn into several in just a matter of days. There are anti-flea and tick treatments that are applied monthly that works well especially if you live in an area where the problem is persistent.

Additionally, bathing the dog with a mild flea shampoo can rid the dog of the fleas immediately, but the ticks may take more work. Do not yank the ticks out because you could leave the head behind and this can cause problems for the dog. If in doubt, call your veterinarian for assistance in ridding the dog of ticks.

Pregnancy comes with a lot of joy but with a lot of other associated health issues as well. When a woman is pregnant one of the most important parts of her life can be tampered with an outbreak of a yeast infection.

The human body is covered with yeast. This however does not cause an infection in most cases as the skin is an excellent barrier against yeast infections. However in certain cases yeast infections do occur. This can happen when there are nicks cuts or abrasions. This is especially so if the cut is in an area that is moist or damp and warm. Yeast survives an multiplies well in these conditions.

Tumors begin to grow when cells multiply rapidly without control.

Dog Training Basics – Avoid These Five Common Mistakes

Dog training mistakes are always human mistakes. Surprised? Don’t be. Many pet owners get frustrated when puppies “have accidents” or grown dogs bark like crazy at the doorbell, while, in fact, these and other problems cannot be faulted on the animal. If people don’t know what they want their dog to do instead, like sitting instead of jumping, going to their bed (when the door opens) instead of bolting out the door, dig in a sandbox instead of the garden, chewing appropriate objects, etc., the dog can’t figure it out either.

Mistake #1: Not Socializing a Dog Properly

Proper socialization is one of the kindest acts people can provide for their dogs. Natural by-products of proper socialization are activity, time with your dog, mental and physical stimulation. A dog that has been taught to socialize properly can adapt to changes in the environment and should be able to deal with a variety of situations. Lack of socialization early on in the life of an animal can lead to fear, anxiety, and aggression. The better adapted a dog is to his environment, the less likely he is to engage in unpleasant behavior.

Mistake #2: Giving Up Too Soon

Being impatient is one of the major problems owners face. Although it’s unrealistic to expect a puppy to be completely housetrained in a few weeks, many owners anticipate just that. It takes time and patience for a dog to understand the basic concept of sitting or staying; it takes even more time to change previous behaviors (such as jumping on the counter) or control urges (barking, digging in the garden, etc). Dogs get the short end of the stick in many situations. People think they should learn things very quickly, but do not always spend the time teaching them. The first step is to be calm and patience when teaching dog training basics. If you’re calm and enjoying the process, your dog will too. Don’t make the training a chore. If you feel yourself getting frustrated or angry, walk away and come back to it later.

Mistake #3: Making Training a Chore

Owners are not the only ones that get frustrated during training. Long or repetitive sessions can also be tedious for the dog. A bored dog usually stops paying attention and will have a harder time learning. Keeping the training sessions short, from 15 seconds up to five minutes a session. Practicing many of these sessions throughout the day is much better than doing one or two long sessions everyday. If you focus on making the session a fun activity instead of a chore, dogs will pick up on tricks faster. Some breeds are more prone to boredom than others, but to be safe, concentrate on making the training session as dynamic as possible.

Mistake #4: Being Ambivalent

Consistency is very important in training. If, at the beginning, of teaching a new cue, sometimes you say “Come” and other times you say “Come over here” you can cause confusion. On the other hand, dogs can understand the meaning of numerous physical and verbal cues to mean the same thing. It is important to teach one cue and then add more later. Confusing your dog will lead to failure. When you stick to a specific command or word, your dog is likely to grasp the concept better. It all has to do with the memory process. Repetition forms a “grove” of sorts in our brain which allows information to flow and connect. The deeper the groove, so to speak, the easier it is for the information we’ve stored through repetition to be accessed.

Mistake #5: Using Physical Punishment

Do do use physical violence ever on your dog! Treat dogs with the same consideration and respect that you would treat your children, grandparents and themselves. Positive reinforcement is the key to success. Training your dog out of fear is wrong! Nonviolent animal training is also more effective than earlier techniques. You can change behaviors such as destructiveness and excessive barking by finding what your dog is doing right and praising him for it. When your dog engages in negative behavior, you can choose to ignore him and hold back praise. Dogs usually pick up on it really fast. Nonviolent dog training allows you to create a partnership with your dog using gentle persuasion based in kindness, respect, and compassion.

People who are too busy or too lazy should reconsider getting a dog or any other pet in the first place. Getting a dog that’s too difficult to handle, either because of breed or size. Some breeds are easier to train than others; some breeds are naturally more submissive. Getting upset and screaming are not appropriate. The last thing you want is an animal that’s scared of being around you.

Joining a class and then giving up after the first lesson because you didn’t like the trainer. Not every trainer is a good fit for everybody. Some trainers are better with smaller dogs while others are experts at managing larger animals. Before signing up, ask to observe a class, see how the animals interact, the trainer’s attitude, etc.

I believe nonviolence fosters nonviolence. Because of the link between dog and human behavior, positive dog training contributes to helping build a world of peace for humans and dogs. When people, especially children, are successful using nonviolent methods with animals, they feel good about themselves and they are encouraged to have a kinder, more positive attitude with their friends, family, and the environment.
