Dogs are not easy to train. You will have to dedicate time and effort in order to train the dog.

Remember that dog training is better when done by professionals. But if you really want to train your dog at home, you will have to make sure that you have learned a few things before beginning.

One you have learned enough to begin, you can start with curing the basic problems. All the dogs have some common issues which you will have to solve. If your dog barks a lot, you will be in trouble. You will have to cure dog barking to start with. You will keep on doing the other things like the dog social training and dog obedience training along with all this.

When you are trying to stop your dog from barking, keep it in mind that dog barking is natural. You can not ask your dog not to bark. But yes, you can reduce it. Your dog will bark as this is the only way a dog knows to express himself. You should start by understanding why your dog barks. If you will know this, you will be able to train him more efficiently.

One important thing to keep in mind is never to reward your dog for his barking. The dog training is all about making the rules and then following them. You will have to make it clear to your dog that you will not be allowing any behavior which breaks those rules. Keep the same rule going with the dog barking. Tell your dog clearly that you are not going to reward him when he barks. This will help you to train him even better.

The other major problem with the dogs is digging. Many dog owners are worried by this habit and they want to get rid of it. But the proper time to teach your dog not to dig unnecessarily is the first few weeks. You will have to teach your dog to learn alternatives. The dogs love digging and they should do it. But you will have to make them understand that they can not dig anywhere they like. You can specify a time and a place for them to dig. Most of the good dog trainers take their dogs out and give them time to dig. This helps the dogs and they do not do it in the home.

You dog will behave properly if you are training him well. There are various training methods which you can use. You can learn these methods and see what works best for you and your dog. Some times the same method does not work on all the pets and you may have to find an alternative according to the nature of the animal.

When you are trying to stop your dog from barking, keep it in mind that dog barking is natural. You can not ask your dog not to bark. Dog barking.yes, you can reduce it. Your dog will bark as this is the only way a dog knows to express himself.

Do you think obedience training is the most important key to having a well-behaved dog? If so, then you’re in for a surprise. If your dog is whining, barking, digging, peeing on the floor or doing any other unwanted behavior, simply using training techniques to stop the problem might not work.

This bad behavior is not always caused by them not knowing a certain training command. Many times, the problem is deeper. Let’s say your dog chews on your furniture. Well, you could use some sort of deterrent to keep your dog from chewing on it – or you could yell ‘no’ at your dog every time you see them chewing, but does that stop them from wanting/needing to chew? No. Most likely they are chewing on things because their teeth hurt. If you’re able to fix the reason their teeth hurt, you’ve fixed the problem. If you can’t fix the reason their teeth hurt (for example, if it’s a puppy that’s teething), then you can get some special teething toys for them to chew on instead.

Here’s another example. You dog is aggressive toward other dogs. You could use training techniques to get your dog to sit down when another dog comes by, rather than chasing after or barking at them. But this doesn’t actually solve the problem – it just treats the symptom. Your dog may have serious anxiety or other issues causing the aggression, and simply treating the symptoms does nothing to fix the actual problem.

What is the solution? Well, the most important thing is to make sure you take your dog to the veterinarian on a regular basis. You should especially take them in if they have a sudden change in behavior. The bad behavior may be caused by a medical problem.

Also, take some time to learn about dog psychology. It will be worth your time. You’ll be able to understand the ways in which your dog communicates with you, and can spot any symptoms of stress or anxiety. Since stress and anxiety are major causes of behavior problems, it’s a wise idea to know the symptoms and how to treat the issues.

You may be thinking I don’t believe dog obedience training is important, given the tone of this article so far. That’s not the case at all though. You should definitely make sure to teach your dog obedience commands. Just don’t rely on strictly using obedience commands when your dog is misbehaving, because there might be a deeper issue causing the problem. Never resort to just punishing your dog’s bad behavior either. Your dog needs rewards and praise.

Don’t give up on your dog. Bad behavior can be fixed with the right attitude and the right techniques. In the US alone, more than 9 million dogs are put to sleep each year. 65% of those are being killed because of behavior problems. Your dog doesn’t deserve to be one of them. He/she can be trained. If you don’t think you can do it on your own, get some help from a qualified dog behaviorist.

Old age in dogs bring many problems. Old aged dog sometimes do not get the full benefit from the diet he has been eating. He may become thin, and his coat becomes harsh and dry. In some cases, a different food, a new feeding dish, or a different person preparing the food may upset the dog.

When your old dog becomes thin and weak you should try feeding him more often. Give him two feedings instead of one per day; or three instead of two. Smaller amount at each feeding is easier on the digestive system, and don’t forget a few treats now and then, such as custard.

Keep fresh drinking water available at all times. If you find an increase in the volume of water consumed, especially accompanied by increased thirst, report it to your veterinarian. Kidney deterioration is common in geriatric dogs. Medication and prescription diets may be necessary. If your old dog has heart disease or stomach or intestinal problems, special foods are available in canned conditions through your veterinarian.

Watch carefully for any changes in the appearance of your dog. The old dog cannot fight infections as effectively as in the young age. If anything seems wrong, take the temperature. Even a degree rise in the body temperature which may mean nothing in a younger dog is a danger sign in the old dogs. Though infection spreads slowly, yet it does spread. Proper treatment must begin before damaging headway is made.

Growth is also a common part of the aging process. Growths may be found on almost any part of the body. The flaps of the ears, the eyelids, and the flesh between the toes are probable places. This should receive immediate treatment by your veterinarian.

Warts on old aged dogs are usually hard, round, and smooth. They are rather common and are caused by a virus. If they become irritated or bleed, have them removed. Warts are often found in the mouth. They often disappear spontaneously without treatment. In any cases, they can be removed surgically.

Tumors of the breasts or testicles often develop in old dogs when they have not been spayed or castrated. These, unfortunately, have a high malignancy rate. Long toenails strain the feet and make walking difficult. The nails can no longer grip the ground and so they grow rapidly. An old dog’s nails rarely wear down to comfortable length naturally, so it is necessary to shorten them with a nail trimmer or a coarse nail file to give the dog better footing on smooth surfaces.

Skin diseases are common health problems of dogs. In normal good condition, the dog’s skin is elastic. In most breeds, the skin of the dog is a light pink color; on a few others, it is blue, dark or spotted. Part the hair and look at your dog’s skin just to make sure it is healthy.

The most common trouble sign is scratching perhaps followed by the appearance of lesions, or a breaking out of blisters or bumps on the surface of the skin. Often the dog’s furious scratching and biting to gain relief aggravates the condition. Consult your veterinarian at the first sign of any dermatological problem. If the problems are diagnosed and treated in the early stage, there is a better the chances of it curing quickly.

I want to talk about a more serious issue here, yorkie health problems. There are a lot of preventable health problems that your yorkshire terrier can be hit with. The consequences can be emotionally painful for both you and your yorkie, as well as very expensive as you probably know that trips to the vet are not cheap, especially for smaller breeds of dogs such as a yorkie. The solution is to be pro-active and take charge of your yorkie’s health ahead of time to prevent any health issues that might crop up later on. Understanding and learning what you need to do to keep your yorkie in top condition health-wise is key.

Potential Yorkie Health Problems

Yorkshire terrier dogs, as well as other dogs for that matter, are susceptible to a wide range of health issues, similar to us humans. The only problem is that your dog can’t speak and tell you what’s wrong with it when it has a health issue such as a stomach ache. If you can’t tell what’s wrong with them, the poor thing will suffer in silence until a very serious pain is detected. Let’s take a moment to understand what symptoms can crop up and what you can do to prevent these health issues from being a problem in the first place.

Dog Obesity

This is one ailment that is probably the most common in dogs across all breeds, terriers included. While small terriers tend to be very energetic, they may tend to gain weight due to other causes. Dog obesity is usually a direct cause of eating more than they’re supposed to and lack of exercise. Left unchecked, obesity can lead to serious consequences including heart failure, tumors, disease of the liver, and problems with their skin. Luckily, this one can be prevented easily by watching your dog’s diet and ensuring they get plenty of exercise. Terrier breeds are known for being energetic so getting them to walk, run and play shouldn’t be too hard to do. Ensuring your Yorkie has a healthy diet will ensure your doggie will continue being energetic and lengthen their life span.

Arthritis and Dysplasia

There are some dogs which can be suspect to problems of their bones and joints. In order to prevent joint and bone problems, make sure they get the right vitamins and minerals each day to support healthy growth. Unfortunately, dogs that are pure breds are the most susceptible to joint problems due to their selectively breeded physical qualities such as being narrower and longer. I advise going to the vet at least once a year to check for joint health.

Dog Allergies

Yorkies can have a variety of different allergies. Flea allergies are probably the most common. If your yorkie has flea allergies, you’ll notice hot spots in your dog which can lead to infections. In order to prevent this, ensure your yorkie gets the right flea medication each month and have your vet examine them for health. Another kind of allergy is food allergy. If skin issues start to crop up to the ears, nose or other hot spots, it may be time to take them to a vet to understand what they can’t eat as tissue issues can be very damaging.

Dog Diabetes

Many new pet owners are suprised that dogs can acquire diabetes but it’s true, this issue is not just a human related on. The cause of diabetes in dogs is usually eating foods that contain too much fat and sugar. Eating too many rich foods can trigger pancreatic problems which often leads to diabetes. To help prevent these issues, ensure your terrier is kept on a strict dog food diet and minimal to no table scraps or extra meals. If your beloved yorkie acquires diabetes, it’s time to have your pet see the vet regularly. Be prepared that your pet may need to have shots administered regularly.

Dog Infections

Infections can crop up in your yorkie’s eyes, teeth, ears and skin. Be sure to clean your yorkie’s eyes, brush their hair and teeth regularly to prevent build ups which can lead to bacterial infections. Ear infections are probably the most frequent and common form of infection for dogs. It’s usually caused by bacteria, dirt or simply a foreign body getting in that space. Luckily, infections are also a problem that is easily preventable with good doggie maintanence.

Most, if not all of these issues can be prevented if your yorkie is on a good diet, plays and runs often, and you keep it clean and well groomed. In any case, I urge all my visitors to visit their vet once a year to check for any issues you might miss. The sooner a health problem, infection or disease is detected and handled, the better and quicker it can be treated and less trips to the vet will be needed in the future.

Sometimes a cat will not like the location of his or her litter box. This can occur for several different reasons:

Some kind of pain at the location of the box Something that has caused the cat to be afraid at the location An odor around the location of the box

Where is the best spot to put a litter box?

Most cats prefer an easily accessible spot, but one with privacy Avoid placing the box near a noisy appliance like the washer, dryer or furnace Experiment with types of boxes: some cats like the privacy of closed boxes, and most like large boxes, but some like small ones.

In general, cats usually dislike having to eliminate near where they eat, so avoid putting the food and water bowls near the litter box.

Stress or anxiety as a source of cat litter box location must always be considered, but is not as frequent a cause of house soiling. It has been said that one cannot have too many litter boxes. A household of three cats would probably fair much better with four boxes.

Specific kinds of stress such as separation anxiety, previously seen only in dogs, but now believed to occur in cats also, usually occurs when there has been a prolonged absence of the owner, typically 8 hours or more. The house soiling typically occurs 8 to 12 hours after the owner’s departure. This behavior can also involve diarrhea and destructive events, and can be treated in much the same way dogs are treated. Training through graduated departures with a lot of skill, time and patience as well as medications help separation anxiety disorders.

Some owners report cats that are naturally shy or fearful. This type of personality may not want to come out into the open to go to the litter box. If there is an identifiable cause such as a certain person, cat dog, object or sound, try to remove or modify it. You might also try using a litter box in a “safe” location for the shy and fearful type cat.

Overcrowding

Some cats may enjoy the company of 20 other cats, while others are unhappy with just one other cat in the household or any other kind of animal. It is actually not natural for cats to live in social groups all the time as they spend most of their time in solitary circumstances, getting together for breeding and sometimes raising kittens together. Cats usually see all living objects, including people in the home as part of the social group. Adding to the group in any way can be upsetting to a cat. One way of solving a multiple cat home environment is to provide plenty of nesting spots vertically like cat trees and shelving so as to give each cat a place of its own away from the others.

For new kitten owners, there are a few things you can do to help avoid house soiling problems. They include:

Make the litter box location easily accessible, private and in a low traffic area Try to provide at least one litter box per cat Use finely-grained, non-scented litters Do not put food and water beside the litter box Scoop the litter box at least daily Change clay litters at least once weekly Change scoop able litters every 6 to 8 weeks Avoid frightening the cat in the litter box, trapping or catching it there Never punish a cat for house soiling Make changes to the litter box filler or location very gradually Call your vet when house soiling occurs to rules out any medical problems that may be causing the problem

Possible Physical Causes for Behavior Problems in Geriatric Dogs

Different breeds of dogs age at different rates. A large breed such as a Great Dane or Newfoundland will reach old age sooner than smaller breeds like Chihuahuas or Toy Poodles. Life spans range from 7 to 15 years, with each year equivalent to 6 or 7 human years. Despite whatever breed your dog may be, you will have to watch them closely and take him on regular visits to the vet to determine where he is in his life cycle and what special needs, if any, are required at each stage.

Regardless of when the onset of old age begins, there are changes that are common to all dogs. Behavioral problems, such as indifference to food, increased wandering, house soiling, and changes in the way your dog interacts with other dogs and people, are all signs that your dog is getting old.

The first thing you should do upon noticing any of these behavioral changes is determine the cause. That means a physical workup and a talk with your dog’s vet. Aging pets will begin to have many more health issues than they did when they were younger and many times those issues will be the cause of problems such as aggression. You are grumpier when you don’t feel well and your pet will be also. Unfortunately, a grumpy pet may be more likely than a human to lash out physically, and that means biting or snapping. If a previously non-aggressive dog begins to exhibit aggressive behavior, determine whether it is a physical problem that may be handled with medication. If not, simply make sure that family members and visitors realize that Fido no longer likes to be touched in that particular spot if, for instance, the problem is an arthritic hip.

Sometimes, however, decreased functioning of eyesight or hearing may cause fear aggression in a pet. In that case, make sure people know that they should warn the pet of their approach, and not to approach the pet suddenly. Simply calling out, “Hey Fido, it’s me,” if the pet has eyesight issues, or making sure he can see you coming if he has hearing issues, will usually do the trick.

Even if your pet is not exhibiting aggression, you will want to be alert for other changes in behavior associated with pain or failing senses. Pets with these problems may also become withdrawn and depressed. If he starts lying around all day and refuses food or playtime, then that may be a sign of depression in your pet. You will want to make the effort to deal with the physical problems, and also to make sure that the pet is still included in interactions with the family.

Any sudden changes in your dog’s habits may indicate that he is getting old. However, you should try to first rule out that it is not a physical problem that is causing the change in behavior. Decreased bladder control or aching joints could keep your dog from wanting to go out as often as he should. Nutrition is also to be taken into consideration, as older dogs have different ones from their younger, more active counterparts. Above all, have patience. Your dog’s life and yours is changing. Don’t give up or abandon him, because he needs you now more than before.

Golden Retriever Breed Diseases and Health Problems

Golden Retrievers are actually considered quite strong and hearty animals. However, they are still susceptible to approximately six common diseases that can be rather harmful to the dogs. These problems can cause the Golden retriever some amount of inconvenience and suffering, so owners should be prepared to be on the look-out for such symptoms.

Skin diseases are one of the top problems with Golden Retrievers. They could have causes as simple as a flea itch or mosquito bite that can cause their skin to be irritated and inflamed. The dogs will worry or bite on that spot until they cut themselves or cause something known as a hot spot. A red, moist and raw spot is known as a hot spot and it can grow in size every time the dog worries it. It will usually require a bandage or a special collar to keep the dog away from this area in order to give it a chance to heal.

Golden Retrievers can suffer from allergies faster than most other breeds. Wheat is typically an offending factor and a lot of commercial dog foods have wheat in their recipes. It is not lethal to animals but it can cause them to have problems with their digestion or cause their skin to become inflamed and irritated. If the dog licks its face excessively or scratches constantly, you might have a dog that is allergic.

Beneath the outer layers of the skin, there could be more severe types of diseases. There are different types of fatty lipomas and the severe liposarcoma that can become common as the dogs grow older.

Fatty lipomas are typically benign and will be able to be removed the next time a dog gets his teeth cleaned and gets general anesthesia. They can develop and become larger, but they are not a threat and can be ignored. On the other hand, liposarcomas are dangerous and need to be removed as soon as possible. They need to be treated as soon as they are diagnosed.

Cataracts and eye afflictions can be frequent among Golden Retrievers that are beyond 10 years of age. Such eye afflictions can lead to poorer vision or even blindness in the dog. There is no cure for such afflictions.

Less frequently seen in Golden Retrievers are problems with the heart, however, should heart problems develop, they are usually subvalvular aortic stenosis or cardiomyopathy. Subvalvular aortic stenosis is a blockage in the left vein of the ventricle and will cause a decrease in the blood flow. At times, the situation is benign, however the dog will be restrained from running around as aften. When the condition is dangerous, the heart is forced to strain itself, working harder when the heart muscles thicken. This heart problem is usually genetic and the treatment can be beta blockers to mild antibiotics. An operation is always a solution but compared to operations on the human heart, it has a lower chance of success.

Cardiomyopathy is an acquired disease which is more serious. It tends to happen in dogs that are 4 to 10 years old and the cause is unknown. The heart muscle will become thin and flabby, progressively getting worse until the dog passes away.

Nevertheless, most Golden Retrievers live a long and healthy live. With the right diet and plenty of exercise, your animal has a better shot at living a wonderful life.
