Should Dogs Eat Grass? If So, Why?

Unlike some animals, such as cats, whose ancestors were hunters, early dogs were scavengers. They would eat pretty much anything that was handy. Some of that lack of a discretionary palate could be why they eat grass, trash or anything else that looks interesting.

All my dogs have been salad eaters. To them, fresh dew on spring grass seems like mixed salad greens with olive oil. They know exactly which grasses they want to eat, search for them, and graze contentedly. Nutritionists tell me dogs do this because fiber is a natural part of a dog’s diet. All good dog food manufacturers ensure a good balance of soluble and insoluble fiber in their products.

But if you are like many dog owners who live in a grassy area you would swear sometimes that your dog is an Angus. Dogs lay out in the yard and graze just like a cow. Dogs explore their worlds with their noses and mouths. And there’s the grass, sweet-smelling, with an appealing texture; and it’s ever-so-accessible on the ground. Why not eat it?

Should dogs eat grass? Yes, if it causes no problem, but there are specific circumstances when grass eating is a sign of medical problems. If your dog does not graze or does so intermittently, then suddenly increases this activity, it is clinically significant. When dogs have stomach or bowel problems, they sometimes eat grass to act as a purgative, to induce vomiting. This is different from the accidental vomiting that may occur from eating grass simply for pleasure.

Grass eating may be a manifestation of pica, a condition characterized by a changed, even depraved, appetite in which dogs eat unusual matter such as earth, roots, even pebbles. If your dog’s grass-eating habits change from his or her normal habits, see your vet within the week.

Humans have both an extreme strength and an extreme weakness when it comes to loving their pets. Dog owners in particular are known for loving their dogs the same as they do their children. Alcoholic beverages can cause intoxication, coma or even death. Chocolate, coffee, tea and other foods containing caffeine are toxic and may affect your dog’s heart and nervous system. Fruit pits can become lodged in the digestive system causing obstruction and possibly leading to death. Grapes and raisins both contain an unidentified toxin that has been proven to cause damage to the kidneys. Hops, primarily as a flavoring and stability agent when brewing beer, can cause panting, increased heart rate, elevated temperature, seizures and even death. Hop is also used in other beverages and herbal medicines. Macadamia nuts contain an unidentified toxin that is known to affect the digestive and nervous systems and cause muscular problems such as weakness and tremors. Marijuana may depress the dog’s nervous system, causing vomiting and changes in their heart rate. If your dog has an insufficient amount of lactase enzymes, dairy products are more of a risk. Persimmon seeds have caused intestinal obstruction and enteritis (an inflammation of the small intestine). Foods or candy sweetened with Xylitol (a substitute for sugar. Used in sugar-free candy, gums and baked goods) can result in low blood sugar and liver damage in dogs.

There are numerous food substances that can be harmful to dogs health such as garlic, raw and cook onions, onion powder, potatoes, rhubarb and even tomato leaves. Raw eggs, raw fish and too much sodium can also lead to canine health problems. It’s important to know about these foods and realize the dangers they can have to your puppies health and your dogs health.

Because your dog relies on you to take care of his health needs, you need to know what may or may not harm him. A little education can go a long way towards preventing puppy health problems and adult dog health issues.

Pumpkin is actually good for your dog. Many veterinarians and other professional dog handlers recommend putting small amounts in your dog’s food. Just keep in mind that moderation is always important to anything we feed ourselves or our dogs.

Bloodhound – the Facts Every Owner of This Dog Breed Should Know

A familiar looking wrinkly and long eared dog, the Bloodhound breed is more than one thousand years old. Originally bred in Belgium by the monks of St. Hubert, the monks selectively bred Bloodhounds with other hounds to perfect the scenting ability of this breed. Bloodhounds were brought into England and eventually America. Bloodhounds have the strongest scenting ability of all hounds and are known for the ability to track scents over long distances that may be days old.

Today, Bloodhounds are bred for the specific purpose of tracking human beings and are used to track victims of disasters or used by the police to track down suspects. Part of the Bloodhound history includes being used in the United States to track down runaway slaves. However, Bloodhounds are not hunters. They do not enjoy killing the prey, just capturing it. They will surround the prey and bay to let the master know its location. Male Bloodhounds will grow to between 25 and 27 inches and weigh 90 to 110 pounds. Female Bloodhounds will average 23 to 25 inches in height and 80 to 100 in weight. This large breed of dog will live about 10 to 12 years.

Bloodhounds have shorthaired coats that are easy to care for and can be black and tan, liver and tan and red and tawny. However, even with regular cleaning, Bloodhounds are sometimes described as having a strong ‘dog’ odor that will not go away. Bloodhounds tend to drool more than most dogs, and are also prone to howl and snore more as well. Described as kind, patient and affectionate, Bloodhounds are a good family dog and do well with children. In fact, many Bloodhounds will allow children to climb all over and will not react in any way. However, exercise caution when Bloodhounds are around children. This large dog may knock over smaller children accidentally.

Bloodhounds need firm and consistent training since they can be strong-minded. This is especially true (and especially important) when out with a Bloodhound, as they will take off after a scent that has caught their attention. Bloodhounds can live in any environment, provided they are exercised at least once a day. Bloodhounds can have medical problems including bloat, stomach cramps, hip dysplasia and ear infections. A padded bed is recommended to avoid calluses on the joints. Some tend to get entropion, where the eyelids turn inward.

The first tip we’ll be looking at is the use of vitamin E to treat your dog’s common skin diseases and disorders. These pills can be purchased practically anywhere and are pretty non expensive. There are several different ways that you can give these pills to your puppy. One way is to just give the dog the pill whole. The other option you have is to slightly pierce the outer shell extract the oil and just rub it on your dog’s skin yourself. Whichever method works for you is the one you should stick with. Dogs often get dry skin so this is a great way to put the moisture back in your pup’s skin and to keep him from itching so bad.

The second tip we’re going to be looking at is the use of a common household item known as Pepto Bismal. In order to treat ear mites you need to take an eye dropper and put two drops of corn oil into your dog’s ears. After that you need to gently massage your dog’s ears and wash them out using a few balls of cotton. You will probably have to repeat this process for several days in a row before all the mites are actually gone.

We all know how constipation can make a person feel, so imagine your dog being constipated. It’s not a very pleasant experience. There are ways we can help our pooches become regular again. This remedy varies depending on the size of your dog. If you have a pretty big dog you’ll need to add 3 or 4 tablespoons of mineral oil into his food. A smaller dog only needs 1 tablespoon; maybe 2 so don’t overdo it. After a day or two your dog should be as good as new again.

Kidney failure in dogs can be a devastating experience both for you and your furry friends. The thought of possibly losing your beloved pet is enough to make you frustrated and depressed. But how can you find out if your dog has a failing kidney, and what are the ways of treating this chronic illness?

Symptoms

Kidney failure is a common disease not only in dogs, but in cats as well. It mostly occurs in aging animals. Early signs may be an increase in water consumption, and an increase in urine production. However, most animals don’t show these symptoms – not until 70% to 75% of their kidney function has failed. For more advanced kidney problems, your dog may show loss of appetite, diarrhea, vomiting, ulcers in the mouth, and a very bad breath.

Treatments of Dog Kidney Problems

For pet owners, kidney failure in dogs is a serious condition. With the proper treatment and care, you can help your dog lengthen its life for a longer time.

Dogs’ kidneys may also be ‘restarted’ through intravenous fluids to flush out the kidneys. Diuresis, as this process is called, may help to make the kidney cells function once more. If there would be enough kidney cells to function, they can help waste removal from the body again. Electrolytes, dextrose and potassium may also help. Proper nutrition and high-quality food are used during dieresis to control diarrhea and vomiting.

Diuresis may resume kidney functions for a few weeks to a few years, or they may function again, but fail as soon as the treatment ceases. There’s also the possibility of kidney functions not returning anymore.

Animals with kidney problems usually undergo a low-protein, low-sodium and low-phosphorus diet. This diet reduces mineral deposits in the kidneys, and generates less nitrogenous excesses, which can cause vomiting at high levels. Low-protein diets mean a decrease of workload on the kidneys. In addition, phosphorus is filtered out of the body through the kidneys, so a low-phosphorus diet can help a lot. A high level of phosphorus in the body leads to poor appetite, so certain medications which help bind phosphates inside the intestines can also help your dog.

Fluids should be continuously given subcutaneously (under the skin.) This process helps the kidney to restart itself, and should be done once a day or once a week. The frequency depends on the degree of the kidney failure.

Make use of medicines and drugs to stimulate the bone marrow so that it would give out new red blood cells to your dog’s body. Since the kidneys manufacture erythropoietin, that hormone stimulates the production of red blood cells through the bone marrow. Most dogs with kidney failure have anemia because this hormone isn’t being produced by the kidney, thereby it cannot stimulate the bone marrow, as well. There are some artificial or synthetic forms of erythropoietin which may mimic the real hormone to help produce red blood cells. However, some dogs may consider this synthetic hormone as a foreign body and make antibodies to battle it.

3 Dog Training Commands That You Should Teach Your Dog First

Whether you are getting a new dog or beginning to work with an old dog, obedience training is a must! There are a number of dog training commands that are important to teach your dog. What dog training commands are the most important to begin with? The three most important dog training commands are: come, wait/stay, and let’s go. These dog training commands are important for both a well mannered dog and also for safety. The three most important dog training commands:

1. Come: This command is vital and could really be a case of life or death in the event of an emergency. For this reason, come is one of the most important dog training commands to teach your dog. Your dog should be trained to understand to come to you on the first command, and although no dog is ever 100% reliable, you should work to be as reliable as possible with your dog. Come should always be trained in a positive and fun manner. Never be a kill-joy! Don’t use come only to end the dog’s fun. Instead, practice it LOTS with toys and treats and reward the dog as much as possible so that coming to you is always fun. Also, never get in the habit of chasing your dog when you need it to come. This only sets up a bad habit and makes your come very unreliable.

2. Wait/Stay: Another one of the most important dog training commands is wait or stay. Wait is about asking your dog not to cross an invisible or real boundary line until you have given it permission. Generally, it is best used when you want the dog to stay back from entry ways, such as the front door, or you want the dog to remain inside a car with an open door. Stay asks the dog to hold a particular position, like sit or down, and stay in a particular location. Teaching a good, strong stay means you know you can place your dog in a position and hopefully count on it to stay there.

3. Let’s Go: Let’s Go represents the last of the most important dog training commands because it is the phrase you give your dog on the walk. It represents for the dog a style of walking and lets him know when you are moving from one place to another. Let’s Go should be a nice, looser leash walk that is controlled. A good Let’s Go means your dog can walk reasonably well on the leash. Your dog understands this command means you are moving on, so it can be used to move the dog away from something it is currently doing. For example, if your dog is visiting another dog or person, and you are ready to move on, Let’s Go tells the dog you are leaving and to follow you. These three dog training commands represent an excellent starting point in your training. These are the most important dog training commands to begin training with and to build from.

As responsible pet owners we have to make the decision whether or not we want to contribute to the problem or do our part to keep unwanted pets out of the shelters and off the streets. So when do we need to neuter or spay the animals? We need to decide by the time our pet is 6 to 8 months old whether or not to sterilize him/her.

Being a responsible breeder is no easy task and there is no profit to be made. Breeding is done strictly for the betterment and continuation of the breed. The costs of the stud service, the buying or making of a whelping box, the veterinarian bill for the care of the mother dog, possible fees for delivering the pups, puppy food, veterinarian checkups for the puppies, eye exams, worming, fees for docking of the tails, vaccinations, etc., etc., quickly eat up any profits to be made. Then there are the countless sleepless nights waiting for the moment of birth, worrying about the newborn puppies, the noise from yelping puppies keeping you awake. It’s simply a labor of love for a responsible breeder.

Whether or not you have a mixed breed or a purebred dog you need to take the precaution so that accidental breedings do not happen. If you have an unspayed female dog you dog will every 6 to 10 months go into heat that lasts about 3 weeks. A heat is also known as an oestrus period. During this time the female will have menses or a period, where she will secrete blood from her vagina. This is a messy situation for a house pet. There are protective garments that may be purchased to contain the mess, but also help deter unwelcome entry from male dogs. Also during this time your dogs behaviour may change and she will be less obedient.

Unsterilized (un-neutered) male dogs can become aggressive and may show overt sexual behaviour when there are in-season females nearby. The male dogs will mark territory in the neighbourhood or in the home by urinating small amounts. Adolescence, is a trying period. Your male dog and you will likely have confrontations over whom is the alpha personality. Now is the time to remember, that you love your dog, but you are the master.

To spay a female dog, a veterinarian removes it’s uterus and ovaries. A male dog is neutered when the veterinarian removes the dog’s testicles. Both operations are usually safe and require one nights stay at the clinic.

The benefits to sterilizing your dog not only include unwanted off-spring, avoiding temperment problems, but also can benefit your dogs health. Having your pet sterilized will decrease the risk of developing tumors in the genital area. Males can develop problems with the prostate gland. Females can develop problems with the mamary glands. Consult your veterinarian before your pet becomes 6 months old. Take a trip to your local S.P.C.A. and take a look at all the homeless cats and dogs before you decide to leave your pet unsterilized.
