Dog Training: How To Stop The Chewing Problem

Many people have begun the task of getting there dog or puppy
into a dog training school. There are a lot of aspects that are
gone over in dog training classes. Unfortunately, one part of
dog training that is not gone over very well in dog training
classes is chewing.

It is hard to go over a chewing problem in dog training classes
because dogs often have nothing to chew on or destroy while in
the class! If you are one of those people who are in dog
training classes, but you still need help with chewing, please
read on.

This type of dog training can be for dogs young and old. Many
people find this part of dog training to be more common in
puppies. But older dogs have been know to need this type of dog
training because they love to chew things up while their owners
are away!

To begin this type of dog training, you must first realize that
all dogs chew. Dogs need to chew. So when you begin, make sure
you have several things that are ok for your dog to chew on.
Then begin your dog training by keeping all of your dogs chewing
toys in one location.

This way, your dog will learn to associate this spot with his or
her chew toys. You must do this in order for this type of dog
training to work. Try to have the dog toys in a “toy box” for
your dog.

During this dog training, never spank or hit your dog if you
catch it chewing on something it is not allowed to. Instead, for
effective dog training, praise your dog and pet it when it chews
on what it is supposed to chew on.

It has been shown that dogs respond much better to positive
praise and positive dog training. If the dog continues to chew
on things that it shouldn’t, verbally reprimand it. Your tone of
voice will be enough punishment and is the only punishment
necessary for this kind of dog training.

Another method of dog training you can try is to put a taste
deterrent on the items your dog shouldn’t chew. This Dog
Training chew deterrent is called “bitter apple” and it is
available at most pet stores.

These are the most effective means of dog training that will
teach your dog not to chew on inappropriate things. If you
follow all of these aspects, your dog training should go more
smoothly.

Dog training can be a fun and rewarding experience…as long as
all of your favorite things aren’t chewed up in the process!
Keep calm and be patient to achieve good results

How To Stop Dog Scratching

There is nothing better to a dog owner than to see his pet healthy, active and happy. A common reason for the transformation of your dog from happy to sad is due to dog scratching. Dogs just can’t stand being uncomfortable. They scratch every part they can possibly reach once that itchy feeling comes their way. Dog scratching is something a dog owner must address. It brings about much stress and trauma to your dog, especially when dog cuts come about. The itchy sensation makes the dog scratch and scratch, not being aware that he is making the problem worse. Of course, all he’s thinking is, “Get rid of this irritating itch!”.

Causes

A dog may appear active and playful, and yet be feeling very sore. There are various reasons for the dog scratching problem. It is most likely because they have a specific skin issue, such as dermatitis.

Dermatitis can be environmental, nutritional, parasitic, infectious or bacterial. Now, what the dog owner must first do is to contact a vet. As soon as it’s noticed, the “dog scratching” problem must be given your full attention, as it may cause serious long-term skin problems if not dealt with early. A dog owner must work hand in hand with his vet, taking the full responsibility of relaying all the necessary information about his dog. With the owner’s cooperation, the vet would be able to identify the possible causes.

Solution

As soon as the cause of the dog scratching is identified, the dog must be treated immediately. Of course, depending on the specific cause, the owner must make changes in order for the skin problem to fully heal. For instance, dog scratching problems can happen to dogs that are allergic to lawn grass (strange but true).

You may also want to consider products that specialize in treating dog scratching. There are many out there but the most effective one I’ve ever seen contains the Mayan traditional herb Tepezcohuite. (In fact, I was so impressed with its natural abilities that I created an all-natural dog balm called K9 KlearUp around this compound – www.k9klearup.com. It’s guaranteed to help clear up 17 of the most common dog skin and coat problems).

So there you have it, some simple solutions to help get rid of annoying dog scratching. Your dog will be wagging his tail again in no time!

Stop Dogs Eating Dog Poop (Coprophagia)

Although dogs eating their poop is probably a natural behavior it’s still a disgusting habit
to have! I mean, why would your dog eat his poop when you are feeding him perfectly good food?

When you’re out enjoying a walk with your dog it’s not a good look if he’s got a face full
of poop.

Apart from being an embarrasment to you, it could be damaging your dog also. Diseases
and worms can be passed on when dogs eat the feces of other dogs.

And what about your dogs breath!

As is the case with all dog behavioral problems, the sooner you stop your dog eating poop the
better. If you allow this filthy habit to establish itself, it can be difficult to put a
stop to it.

Why Do Dogs Eat Their Poop?

There are many theories as to why dogs eat their poop (feces). It is thought that dogs perform
coprophagy for two main reasons:

1. It could purely be a behavioral problem.

2. It could mean that your dog has an underlying medical problem.

Some Specific Reasons Dogs Eat Their Poop

- Bitches with a young litter of puppies often eat the puppies droppings to keep the area
clean. Also in the wild this act by the mother could hide the presence of her puppies from
predators.

- Your puppy may have a vitamin or mineral deficiency and believes eating poop will be
nutritious to him.

- A puppy may begin to eat feces as a result of watching his owner clean up his poop. He just
copies his owners behavior.

- If a puppy is punished for eliminating (pooping) in the house he may eat his poop to hide
the evidence in future. He may associate the punishment with any time he poops, rather than
just when he poops inside the house.

- It simply tastes good – I know it sounds disgusting but this may well be the reason most
dogs eat their poop.

- Could be the result of anxiety or boredom.

- Could be that your dog is cleaning up his area. This should be you the owner’s job.

- Some dogs have been know to start eating their poop when on antibiotics.

- If you are over feeding your dog he could eat his feces because he hasn’t digested all the
food properly. Therefore his feces still smell and probably taste the same as his dinner.

How To Stop Your Dog Eating Poop

There are lots of proven methods you can employ to stop dog coprophagia. One thing to keep in
mind is to always have your dogs vaccinations up to date, and worming must be done regularly.

- Feed a well balanced and nutritious meal.

- Try feeding twice a day – keep it to the same amount though. Your dog may just be hungry.

- Always keep the dogs living area clean from feces.

- Teach him the “off” command. This is a basic obedience training command, if you have
established yourself as the alpha dog your dog will respect this command almost immediately.

- Add a bit of Pineapple, Spinach or Pumkin to your dogs meal. Not sure why but apparently
these things taste horrible in the poop.

- You will find a few products in your Pet Store that address this common problem. Forbid and
Deter are a couple that I have known to produce good results with poop eaters.

- Use the power of “negative association” through the use of a choke or prong collar. Every
time your dog goes to eat any feces say No! and immediately give the lead a short sharp tug.
This provides a correction to your dog, he will soon establish that trying to eat poop is not
a pleasant experience! It is crucial that you are consistent using this method, it has to be
applied every time not just some of the time.

- As soon as you see your dog eliminate provide a distraction to him. You can run away from
the area or maybe just call him over to you and offer him a treat.

- Some owners have found that by putting a foul tasting substance like tabasco sauce or
cayenne pepper directly onto the feces will be enough to break the dogs habit. I’m not
convinced by this one but it may be worth a try.

Of course if there is an underlying medical problem which is contributing to your dogs
poop eating problem, then none of the above methods will be effective. In such cases you
should get your Vet to give him a thorough examination.

One last thing – the good news is that most dogs grow out of this habit eventually.
